Estes acquires 7 leased terminals from Yellow

Privately owned less-than-truckload carrier Estes announced it has closed on lease purchases of seven terminals previously operated by now-defunct Yellow Corp.

The Richmond, Virginia-based company said Thursday that the new locations will result in a net increase of 290 doors to its national network of 11,832. Estes has added 508 doors this year, a 4.5% increase from the end of 2023. It plans to add 940 more within the next nine months.

Estes said it remains debt-free following the transaction.

Saia took on big volumes, higher costs in Q3

Saia Inc. drank from an LTL fire hose in the third quarter, taking on huge volumes in the wake of Yellow Corp.’s demise and driving up its costs and operating ratio.

Investors chose to focus on the higher costs and not the record revenue and the increases in tonnage, shipments and yield per hundredweight. As of midday Friday, shares of the Johns Creek, Georgia-based LTL carrier were down 7.3% to $349.48 per share.

Saia (NASDAQ: SAIA) reported third-quarter revenue of $775 million, a record for...

Big gains at Estes in recovery from cyberattack

Webb Estes took to a public video platform this week to report that most of the key operations at the LTL carrier that bears his family name have been fixed after a cyberattack early this month.

Coming almost two weeks after a previous video and published update, in which Estes Express said its electronic data interchange systems had been restored, the latest update by Webb Estes, who is president and COO, reviewed several more systems that are online. It was published on the Estes website...

Taking stock of what happened at Estes

Jeremy Daily is on the faculty at Colorado State University. But pretty soon, he’s going to be making presentations in Houston at a conference targeting cybersecurity for the LTL industry, about a month after a major LTL carrier got hit with a cyberattack.

The gathering sponsored by the LTL trade group National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) Oct. 22-25 in Houston might be the most appropriately timed conference any group has had the fortune — or misfortune — to schedule. It will...

Cyberattack victim Estes making ‘steady progress’

There was good news coming out of Estes Express on Friday as it concluded a full workweek severely hampered by a cybersecurity breach.

Estes, in a brief statement for the media and in an email sent to its customers and obtained by FreightWaves, said it was making progress in its “core systems.”

Estes is “excited to announce we’ve made steady progress on bringing many parts of our IT systems back online,” it said in the email.

And in the media statement, Estes said it was “pleased to report that...

Estes opens online portal for customers as cyberattack drags on

Estes Express, still suffering the impact of a cybersecurity breach, has set up an online portal to communicate with the company.

The page is a sign that the less-than-truckload carrier has at least one small facet of its website running, as the page is under the normal estes-express.com URL. But there is little else on the page except a form to be filled out by customers and other entities doing business with Estes.

At the top of the page is a declaration that Estes is “Open for Business.” And...
