Shippers Dissatisfied With Clarity Of Surcharges And Transit Times – Drewry

containership representation imge

The level of satisfaction concerning container carriers among exporters, importers, and freight forwarders falls marginally, according to the third annual shipper satisfaction survey of Drewry and the European Shippers’ Council (ESC).

The joint ESC and Drewry survey reveals that the 249 shippers and forwarders who took part in the survey rated the service of container shipping lines with a score of 3.1 on average (which is 0.1 lower than last year) on a scale of 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very...

Shippers’ council slams block exemption rule and calls for liner consortia reform

As the European Commission continues its review of the liner shipping’s Block Exemption Regulation (BER), which allows container carriers to work in consortia, cargo owner lobby group the European Shippers Council (ESC) has called for the law to be repealed – or at least fundamentally altered.
The BER, which became the de facto legislation covering liner alliances – allowing carriers to share operational data – after the EU outlawed the liner …

Shippers want more transparency from those who handle their ocean freight

Shippers have called on carriers, infrastructure operators and freight service providers to improve visibility in the ocean freight supply chain.
Speaking at the European Shippers’ Council’s Maritime Day in Rotterdam last week, Bart Kuipers of the city’s Erasmus University said ports had a particularly bad reputation.
“One shipper told me that whenever someone mentions the phrase ‘sea port’ to him, he shudders,” said Mr Kuipers.
“He compares the problems he has experienced at …

Uncertainty remains over who will pay for compliance with IMO 2020

Carriers and shippers remain in dispute over who will pay for compliance with the pending sulphur fuel cap.
And they have further concerns over unified global enforcement.
At the European Shippers’ Council Maritime Day 2019, Nick Lurkin, of the Royal Association of Netherlands’ Shipowners (KVNR), said carrier customers needed to accept the cap.
“With the IMO regulations there is no delay, even if there are still some that think it will be delayed …

Carriers and ports and shippers lock horns as EC reviews liner block exemption

The European Commission’s competition directorate has questioned whether the liner consortia block exemption regulation (BER) is the right tool to regulate the liner shipping industry in Europe.
Yesterday at the European Shippers’ Council Maritime Day in Rotterdam, director general for competition Itai Rabinovici said the EC was considering amending and extending the BER.
“But we must also consider whether the block exemption is the right statuary instrument to achieve what the industry …

Shippers wanted!

ESC is encouraging shippers to join European proposals to guide innovation for more effective supply chains. Indeed, the European Commission’s wish to have shippers involved in funded projects is getting more and more expressive. ‘This is the best possible guarantee for innovation to be implemented’, they say!

Through different funding programmes the European Commission pushes the current transport system towards a maximum use of digitalisation and to zero emissions.

By participating in funded...

The “black box” opened by DTLF

Connecting business processes across stakeholders in a supply chain data pipeline is beneficial and at the same time safe and secure. But the transport part is to be fully integrated in these pipelines … and preferably soon!

Supply Chains of world class manufacturers and traders of goods are steered by the value tools like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Transport Management System (TMS). That is meanwhile a fact!

ERP is basically a data pipeline that integrates various organisational...

Shippers want ‘a market approach’ dialogue on shipping line bunker surcharges

As crude oil races towards $100 a barrel, the European Shippers’ Council has called for “a market approach” dialogue on shipping line bunker surcharge mechanisms ahead of the IMO 2020 sulphur cap.
Brent crude hit a four-year high yesterday, at $82 per barrel, pushing up the price of IFO 380 heavy fuel oil (HFO) above $450 per ton.
The current cost of low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) – compliant with the new regulations – is …
