Restocking boosts January US port activity

The past few years have brought plenty of questions as to whether the COVID-19 pandemic changed supply chains permanently or, once constraints eased, if supply chains would return to pre-pandemic patterns. Those answers are starting to reveal themselves as the ports release January figures.

The biggest East Coast port, the Port of New York and New Jersey, retained its place as the second-busiest port in the country in terms of loaded imports, only surpassed by the Port of Los Angeles.

Booming Rates And Exports Causes Global Imbalance

China’s exports recovered fast from the COVID-19 pandemic but delivering goods overseas has become difficult due to increasing shipping costs, reports CGTN.

1.6 trillion yuan export volume

In October, China’s export volume topped 1.6 trillion yuan, jumping 7.6 percent year on year, the seventh consecutive month of positive growth since the coronavirus outbreak.

Trade outlook clouds Port of Oakland forecast

Port of Oakland officials attributed a July import cargo volume gain to U.S. retailers restocking inventories depleted during the coronavirus pandemic, but they’re not shopping for party hats just yet.

The California port reported a 6.4% year-over-year increase in containerized import shipments in July, much better than the 1.9% step up in June and welcome news after monthly declines from February through May.

Port of Oakland volume uptick pleasant surprise

The Port of Oakland this week reported June loaded import volume grew 1.9% year-over-year. 

“The gain was unexpected given that shipping lines canceled 10% of their scheduled Oakland visits due to the trade-related impact of the coronavirus,” the port said. 

The port attributed the uptick in imports to retailers accelerating shipments to the United States because of capacity restrictions as shipping lines continue to cancel sailings, as well as to an anticipated hike in freight rates.

Port of Long Beach posts 11.1% container decline

The Port of Long Beach said Friday the COVID-19 pandemic continued to drive down demand for goods in the second quarter of 2020, leading to an increase in canceled sailings and a decline in containers shipped through the gateway.
