Saipem confirms death onboard its vessel not related to COVID-19

Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantined Saipem FDS vessel at Waalhaven in Rotterdam after one employee’s death, the owner of the vessel informed that the employee lost his life due to natural causes, as Dutch authorities confirmed that wasn’t coronavirus positive.

In fact, the offshore vessel was first put under quarantine as last Wednesday one of its worker tested positive for coronavirus.

Port of Oakland: Dockworker dies after falling from ship

A longshore worker fell to his death from the deck of a container ship while at berth at the US Port of Oakland, in the morning hours of March 31, 2020.

The Port expressed its condolences and said the fatal accident was under investigation by local authorities.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union confirmed that the accident victim was one of its members.

Accidents Investigation Board Norway released its report regarding the 10 September 2018 incident, when a crew member died in an occupational accident on board Rohav LLUZ in Bergsfjorden, Senja municipality.

UK MAIB warning: Sudden discharge of condensed aerosol fire extinguishing system leads to fatality

The UK MAIB issued a safety bulletin highlighting a potentially serious hazard associated with condensed aerosol firefighting suppressant particles. The warning came after a relevant fatal accident on the fishing vessel ‘Resurgam’, in November 2019.

Lessons learned from fatal one metre

During hold-cleaning operations, the crew were using a ladder and a high-pressure water jet to remove cargo residue from the sloping upper hopper bulkhead. The crew member on the ladder lost his balance and fell backwards on to the tank top, striking his head.

As the Nautical Institute reports, the ladder was secured at the top by a rope and was stabilised by a crew member at the bottom. Another crew member climbed the ladder and directed the water-jet on to the bulkhead to remove cargo residue.

Man dead after going overboard from Color Magic

A German passenger from the ferry cruise ship Color Magic was found dead after falling overboard off Strømstad, in the North Sea, in the afternoon hours of Wednesday.

Following notification at about 7:30 pm, Swedish Maritime Rescue Center sent Rescue Helicopter Rygge to Skagerak, to search for a man overboard from the cruise ship.

Chinese cargo ship sinks off Japan, 13 missing

A Chinese cargo ship collided with a Japanese fishing vessel, resulting to the former’s sinking. From the sunken vessel, one crew member was rescued, whereas 13 seafarers are still missing.

Captain dies as pirates attack tanker

Pirates attacked the tanker San Ramons off Venezuela, on February 24. During the attack, the Captain was shot in the head and subsequently died, while another crew was injured, and one is missing, after jumping overboard.

Two passengers of Diamond Princess die because of the coronavirus

Japan’s health ministry has informed that two passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship have died from the novel coronavirus. The news come as passengers from the ship that have been tested negative are starting to leave the ship after two weeks of quarantine.
