The US Coast Guard has dealt with two subsequent fatal incidents involving fishing vessels in the northeast coast. The first involved a sinking vessel off Maine, resulting in two deaths and the second a man overboard fatality off Nantucket.

Three dead as boat capsizes off Hong Kong airport

Three customs officers lost their lives as their boat capsized on January 21, in waters off Hong Kong International Airport. Two crew members survived the incident, however the cause of the accident is not yet known.

The Fire Services Department informed that it sent 72 firefighters and rescuers to the are of the incident, after receiving a report. According to sources, the vessel hit an unknown object.

In its latest investigation report UK MAIB focuses on a fatal incident concerning a skipper onboard a UK-registered fishing vessel ‘Artemis’ who fell head-first through an access hatch between the vessel’s wheelhouse and its mess deck 2.1m below, resulting to severe head injuries and died. The USCG rescued on January 7, Tuesday, two fishermen from the water when their vessel sank in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina, both suffering from hypothermia, with one of the rescuees losing their life despite the efforts at resuscitation. According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) of Durban, a Brazilian crewman lost his life onboard a heavy lift vessel at South Africa, while five of the vessel’s personnel reported to have been injured as well. One fisherman lost his life and another one is missing after a trawler sank seven miles South of Hook Head, Ireland, on 4 January, according to data provided by Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
