Four dead after tanker fire in Persian Gulf

After a fire broke out on the Zoya 1, off the Strait of Hormuz, four people were killed, in spite of initial information that claimed that the crew had been rescued. The fire occurred 34 kilometers (21 miles) off Sharjah.

According to officials in the UAE, Emirati authorities will carry out a DNA test to see if two of the dead were the two Indian sailors that were reported missing, while two others Indians were also killed.

Marina on fire engulfs 35 boats, 8 dead in Alabama

At least eight people were killed when a fire destroyed dozens of boats in a marine in the US of Alabama, on January 27, with authorities looking for additional victims on the water and the cause of the fire remaining unknown.

Containership hit by fire off Mozambique

Containership experiences fire in its cargo hold containers

On 4 January 2020, the containership knows as “Cosco Pacific” reported unexpectedly fire in its cargo hold containers. Specifically, the vessel was en route from Port Klang Malaysia to Ngava Sheva western India when the fire started and had to reroute.

Container fires onboard: Time to take action

Cargo fires are not only an environmental concern but also cause large losses leading to severe business disruption and operator’s reputational damage. No matter how we have progressed on tackling with firefighting onboard, it can only take one container to start a fire onboard a large vessel. Unluckily, SOLAS amendments for fire-fighting arrangements have not kept pace with increases in ship size while better prevention measures must also address the concerning rise in cargo misdeclaration.
