Mesa Air to become first US airline to test drone delivery

Regional air carrier Mesa Air will become the first U.S. airline to enter the world of drone delivery. Mesa Air Group, the parent company of Mesa Air, has signed an agreement with drone provider Flirtey for four delivery drones with an option to purchase 500 additional drones.

Mesa (NASDAQ: MESA) and Flirtey said in a joint release they will target last-mile food delivery initially. The service will eventually be expanded in the U.S. and New Zealand.

Maybe not today, and not likely tomorrow, but one day soon, many Americans will receive their first e-commerce delivery by drone. For residents in select areas of the country – North Carolina, Arkansas and Ohio among others – drones are already making deliveries to the home.

Flirtey firing up production, taking preorders for delivery drone

Flirtey, the first company in the U.S. to conduct a Federal Aviation Administration-approved drone delivery back in 2015, announced it is ready to ramp up production of its drone delivery system and is now taking preorders.

The Flirtey Eagle is part of the overall technology package the company offers, which includes the Flirtey Portal and autonomous software platform. The company is seeking FAA certification for its last-mile delivery drone system.

Buffalo Wild Wings to be flown by drone

A Mobile, Alabama franchisee of a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant wants to deliver food to nearby customers’ doors by drone.

To test the service, Brian Jordan of Potters Wings Mobile partnered with Deuce Drone. The two companies plan to begin local food deliveries by drone in late August.

“Partnering with Deuce Drone will give us the opportunity to test new ways to evolve and meet the takeout needs of customers through drone technology,” Jordan said in a statement.
