Rio Tinto will buy 4 battery-electric locomotives from Wabtec

Mining company Rio Tinto will be purchasing four FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives from rail technology provider Wabtec (NYSE: WAB) as part of its wider efforts to reduce scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

The locomotives will support Rio Tinto’s mining operations in the Pilbara region of western Australia. By utilizing the locomotives, which Wabtec says have an energy capacity of 7 megawatt-hours, Rio Tinto expects to reduce its fuel costs and emissions by double digits...

Wabtec, GM collaborating on advanced battery technologies for locomotives

Wabtec (NYSE: WAB) and General Motors (NYSE: GM) are collaborating on bringing battery and fuel cell technology to the freight locomotive.

Wabtec: Battery-electric locomotive reduces fuel use by 11%

Wabtec’s (NYSE: WAB) battery-electric locomotive reduces a train’s fuel consumption by an average 11%, the Pittsburgh-headquartered rail equipment manufacturer and technology provider said Monday. 

The FLXdrive, which Wabtec bills as the world’s first 100% battery-powered, heavy-haul freight locomotive, also reduced the train’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the company. Wabtec was unveiling the results of a three-month study on the locomotive.
