The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) has released its April 2025 “State of Fraud in the Industry” report, revealing a significant surge in freight fraud incidents that are impacting 3PLs and freight brokers nationwide. From Sept. 1, 2024, through Feb. 28, 2025, there were 1,611 fraud reports filed across seven key categories — an increase of 65% from the prior eight-month reporting period.

Insurance costs, fraud and cargo theft hit Landstar’s Q1

Freight broker Landstar System’s first quarter was marred by several previously disclosed factors. Unfavorable claims development, increased accident severity, stolen cargo and fraud at a satellite office were the primary culprits.

Landstar (NASDAQ: LSTR) reported first-quarter earnings per share of 85 cents, 47 cents lower year over year. The period included a 31-cent hit from higher insurance and claims expenses and a 10-cent hit, $4.8 million, tied to “a supply chain fraud” at an affiliate.

GenLogs launches initiative to combat theft using counterterrorism methods

GenLogs, an asset intelligence platform, announced Wednesday it will begin offering a free investigative service to help the freight industry recover stolen or missing equipment.

Open to carriers, brokers and shippers alike, the service allows users to submit details of missing assets to GenLogs. In response, GenLogs will use its nationwide network of roadside sensors to determine the asset’s last known location and set real-time alerts for tracking.
