The end of the freight recession and impacts for 2025

On this episode on WHAT THE TRUCK?!?, Dooner sits down with Thom Albrecht, Chief Revenue Officer at Reliance Partners, to break down the possible end of the freight recession and what the trucking market will look like in 2025.

On a previous episode, Albrecht predicted a March 2025 end of the freight recession and a turning point in the market. Gone would be the days of carriers barely running at a profit and just trying to get by.

In a follow-up interview with Dooner after some new data came...

Check Call: The election special

(GIF: GIPHY)

It’s the biggest day every four years. It’s not the opening ceremony of the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, it’s Election Day. The citizens of the U.S. get to exercise their civic duty and vote for their elected officials. This year is extra special ’cause it’s a presidential election.

The election is crucial because the president will set policies and tariffs, enforce regulations, and do a host of other things that can impact the economy and the supply chain. Nothing is set in...

SONAR’s data is free during the hurricane disruptions

The immediate aftermath of a major hurricane event often creates chaos in the supply chain. Government agencies and retailers rush critical freight to staging areas near the disaster zone and significant amounts of trucking and trailer capacity can be absorbed and taken off the highway by relief efforts. Meanwhile, as shippers in the region come back online, they face an uncertain freight environment—carrier networks have been disrupted, trucks may not be dispatchable, and they may find...

Hurricane Milton may be too much for the freight market to handle

The North American freight market is experiencing its third major event in two weeks’ time. Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in the Tampa, Florida, area as a major Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds around 125 mph. The storm surge is expected to be more like that of a Category 4 or 5 storm, however, making it potentially one of the strongest storms ever to hit the Tampa area.

Milton is hitting on the heels of two major market-disrupting events: the International...

Hurricane Milton already impacting Florida freight markets

The impacts of Hurricane Milton are already appearing in freight markets in Florida. The storm is currently forecast to make landfall just south of Tampa as a Category 3 with sustained winds of 127 mph and gusts upwards of 155 mph.

Is the prospect of tightening capacity this fall overblown?

Capacity coming into the freight market?

A measure of available capacity, the tender rejection rate has shown the lack of a sustainable uptick following Labor Day. (Chart: SONAR)

For the past two years, the freight industry has been looking forward to capacity coming out of the market, which would improve the supply-demand balance from carriers’ perspective. However, as Todd Maiden reports on FreightWaves, the latest Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI) shows that capacity may actually be increasing....

Navigating market uncertainty in 2024

Freight is cyclical at its core. There are good years and bad years and market corrections. Sometimes market corrections last a lot longer than they should, which is what the freight market is experiencing right now.

On this episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!?, Reliance Partners Chief Revenue Officer Thom Albrecht joins host Dooner to break down the future of freight markets and when they think the market will finish its correction and return to equilibrium.

Albrecht says: “Since the Fourth of July...

Analysis: SBA disaster loans propped up carriers, prolonged Great Freight Recession

The extraordinary length of the trucking downturn is best explained by a government program that flooded small carriers with tens of billions of dollars of cheap, long-dated credit.

The persistence of the post-COVID trucking capacity overhand has perplexed industry observers for more than a year now. After the pandemic demand boom faded, there were too many trucks and not enough freight, and rates fell through the floor, bottoming around $1.49 per mile, exclusive of fuel, in May 2023.

Trucking...
