Shipping line CMA CGM’s first air cargo destination: Chicago

Ocean container line CMA CGM’s new in-house cargo airline will operate its first flight March 8 from its home base at Liege Airport to Chicago, the company said Tuesday. It also confirmed earlier reports that Air Belgium will operate the fleet of four previously owned Airbus A330-200 freighters that it recently acquired.

In addition to diversifying its freight business, the move into air cargo gives the French ocean carrier’s huge logistics arm, CEVA Logistics, a leg up securing hard-to-find...

Amazon Air paves way for third-party delivery

A light blue Amazon Air 737 jet moves along airport roadway.

Amazon’s (NASDQ: AMZN) private cargo airline will nearly double the number of flights operated in a year by this summer as it rapidly grows its fleet, laying the groundwork for significant expansion of next-day delivery options and potentially hauling third-party shipments, researchers at DePaul University say.

Amazon’s air network has evolved to the point that in the next 18 months it could begin shipping packages of goods not purchased on the Amazon platform, the authors predict in a report...

Ocean carrier CMA CGM buys jets for new air cargo unit

Close of landing gear on a large jet.

CMA CGM, the fourth-largest container shipping line and parent of CEVA Logistics, now owns a cargo airline. The move bears similarities to what Amazon.com (NASDQ: AMZN) did five years ago when it launched a private airline to help support its rapidly growing e-commerce business.

The French shipping company, based in Marseille, announced Friday it was diversifying its transportation and logistics portfolio by creating an airfreight division. It has purchased four Airbus A330-200 freighters, which...

TSA to reveal security plan for air cargo industry

Workers at an express air hub as packages come down chutes into air cargo containers.

Companies that purchase and provide transport on all-cargo aircraft will be closely watching whether the Transportation Security Administration on Wednesday offers an alternative security arrangement many believe is designed to help one company — Amazon — avoid screening every outbound shipment for explosives.

How to comply with pending international airfreight security standards is reopening a  long-running policy debate over whether supply chains are best protected through a risk-based...

TSA to propose scan-all alternative for air cargo security

A TSA inspector watches a Saudia plane being loaded with pallets of cargo.

The Transportation Security Administration will unveil how it plans to meet new international requirements for screening 100% of exports on freighter aircraft during a meeting next month with e-commerce shippers and logistics providers.

The international standards, scheduled to go into effect June 30, require all cargo on dedicated freighter aircraft to be physically screened for explosives, as has been done the past decade for shipments traveling on passenger aircraft. Other governments could...

Air Canada to pursue e-commerce boom with converted freighters

View from tarmac, rear sideview of white jet with dark red tail, Air Canada, on sunny day. Pallets of cargo sit in the foreground waiting to be loaded.

Buoyed by its ability to pivot to lucrative cargo-only flights during the coronavirus crisis, Air Canada (TSX: AC) on Monday said it would develop an all-cargo fleet with converted freighters to take advantage of fundamental shifts in the airfreight market.

Officials said an extended shortage of aircraft to carry cargo as passenger airlines downsize until demand recovers —  and meteoric growth in e-commerce sales that require express delivery — have created a path to significantly grow cargo...

Will we really need 8,000 jumbo jets to transport COVID vaccines?

A jumbo jet lifts off the runway with several planes parked in the background.

It has been widely reported that the world will need 8,000 dedicated 747 jumbo jets to distribute a COVID-19 vaccine to everyone.

That’s the figure the International Air Transport Association gave last month. DHL Express and McKinsey, meanwhile, estimate that 15,000 freighters will be needed to deliver 10 billion doses over two years.

The reality is, no one really knows how many aircraft it will take. There are so many variables to be determined that it’s difficult to define what the vaccine...

Cathay Pacific renews emphasis on cargo with leadership changes

A white Cathay Pacific jumbo jet gets ready to takeoff. Cathay Pacific is bolstering its cargo team with new additions.

Cathay Pacific, the fifth largest cargo airline in the world in terms of shipment volume, is reshuffling its cargo team as it looks to capture more business during a period of anemic passenger travel because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Hong Kong airline is running its freighter fleet full tilt and throwing idle passenger aircraft into cargo service as mini-freighters, but the leadership change is designed to improve customer service.

The company has reestablished a dedicated director of...

Cathay Pacific strips seats from 777 aircraft for cargo

A Cathay Pacific widebody jet, up close side view. Cathay Pacific is removing seats from a couple planes to increase cargo capacity.

After operating thousands of cargo-only passenger flights since late March, Cathay Pacific  has deployed two widebody aircraft with seats removed to maximize floor loading of cargo in the passenger cabin.

The Hong Kong-based airline removed the economy and premium economy seats from two Boeing 777 passenger planes to create more space for personal protection equipment and high-value products, it said in a cargo-oriented newsletter published Friday.

Cathay Pacific began flying the modified...
