Maersk’s commitment to green methanol is not limited to its newbuild program. Next year it will retrofit its 2017-built, 15,000 TEU containership Maersk Halifax for methanol dual fuel operation, in the first of eleven green-methanol engine retrofits planned for mid-2024 (see earlier story). The engine retrofits will be carried out by MAN PrimeServ. Alfa Laval has been chosen to provide the fuel supply system for the first of its kind containership methanol retrofit project.

6 new methanol-fueled box ships will have Alfa Laval fuel supply systems

A key technology in six methanol dual-fuel 1,170 TEU containership newbuilds will be the Alfa Laval FCM methanol (fuel conditioning module, methanol) low-flashpoint fuel supply system (LFSS).

The ships have been ordered by Eastaway, a member of the X-Press Feeders Group, at Chinese shipyards Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd and New Dayang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. They will have two-stroke MAN B&W ME-LGIM engines that can run on methanol as well as conventional fuels.
