Global engineering company Wärtsilä has begun testing ammonia as a fuel that can be used in the shipping and energy sectors for power generation.

The International Maritime Organization’s vision of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050. Ammonia is a candidate for being...

New VLSFO Fuels Show Low Viscosity!

VLSFO quality remains a headline IMO2020 topic. As suppliers are getting more experienced at producing VLSFO blends, the proportion of off-spec tests has been declining, although certain quality concerns remain. One of these is the reduction in viscosity, which is due to more distillate blending. This has resulted in vessels being required to adjust age-old practices in order to handle and consume the fuel and moreover require a change in tact when procuring bunkers.

The choice of fuel is often...

[Watch] How LNG Behaves As the Leakiest Fuel Emitting GHG!

With 2020 in place and decarbonization target in the horizon, LNG has become a visible choice for zero-carbon future. As more ships take the LNG route, shippers are gradually warming upto idea of LNG implications on climate, reports ICCT.

Today we are highlighting a study conducted by ICCT which shows the climate implications of LNG as a marine fuel

The Question Lies in LNG Constituent

More and more ships, including container ships and cruise ships, are being built to run on liquefied natural gas...

Refinery News: Muted Impacts Noticed Till Now Due To Strikes in Europe

According to an article published in Platts, some turnarounds are still continuing in Europe while news is emerging on newly planned works for 2020.

Collective labour agreement

Meanwhile, the impact of strikes has so far been muted. The potential industrial action at BP Rotterdam refinery has been called off after members of Dutch labor unions CNV and FNV at BP’s Rotterdam refinery accepted a new offer from the company for the collective labor agreement. The strikes at French refineries have...

Mixes Becomes the Fuel of Choice for Shipowners As IMO 2020 Nears

According to a Reuters report, the price differential between VLSFO and marine gasoil has narrowed sharply at various major port locations around the world in recent weeks.

Lowering Price Difference

The IMO 2020 rules lower the ceiling on sulfur in ship fuel to 0.5% sulfur unless they are equipped with exhaust-cleaning systems known as scrubbers, down from 3.5% currently.

In Singapore, the world’s largest bunkering port, the difference in price between VLSFO and marine gasoil, a distillate-based...

Tankers Run on Fumes As Fuel Switch Causes Shipping Delays

  • From January ships must load VLSFO or expensive marine diesel or scrubbers.
  • This has prompted concern from oil producers, storage operators and shippers over the potential for a chaotic switch.
  • Major ports are running 10 days behind schedule across fuel types.

According to an article published in Euro News, disruption to shipping from the long-anticipated switch to more environmentally friendly marine fuels has finally arrived, exacerbated by logistical problems as much as any shortage of the...

Barge grain movements decrease 10% over last week

For the week ending Oct. 5, barge grain movements totaled 507,298 tons. This is a 10% decrease from the previous week and 6% less than the same period last year. For the week ending Oct. 5, 314 grain barges moved down river. This is 41 fewer barges than the previous week. There were 669 grain barges unloaded in New Orleans, 2% fewer than the previous week.

During the same period, 35 ocean-going grain vessels were loaded in the Gulf — 13% more than the same period last year. Forty-five vessels...

(FAQs) IMO2020 Critical Responsibilities of Fuel Suppliers & Users

Recently, refiners, shipowners and global shipping institutions came together to provide a joint guidance for IMO2020 and in these article we are highlighting the responsibilities that need to be taken for using Compliant Fuel.

Responsibilities of fuel suppliers

Suppliers are expected to deliver a fuel which meets the parameters agreed between the supplier and the buyer.

‘Supplier’ in this context may not necessarily be the actual person delivering the fuel; the fuel supplier is the party...

Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud, Director of Sales and Marketing for Exhaust Gas Cleaning, Wärtsilä

What is a scrubber? How does it work? Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud from Wärtsilä explains the basics around environmental footprint from the ship, for me. The technology has been there for quite some time but since there has not been any incentive to use it it’s only now that the item has surfaced to the top of the agenda in the maritime industry.

Heidi is a chemist, so she explains what happens if we are not reducing the SoX and NoX in the exhaust gas from ships. She also speaks about fuel,...
