16,828 TEU OOCL Iris sets new Port of Savannah size record

The OOCL Iris became the largest capacity vessel to ever call the Port of Savannah, when it arrived at Garden City Terminal Tuesday, Feb. 25.

With a maximum capacity of 16,828 twenty-foot equivalent container units, the OOCL Iris is 1,204 feet long and 167 feet wide. The CMA CGM Marco Polo held the previous maximum capacity record at the Port of Savannah, at 16,022 TEUs.

Quarterly volumes up at Georgia ports despite September decline

Fiscal year first-quarter volumes at Georgia Ports Authority rose 9.6% compared with the first quarter of 2022 despite a 7.6% decline in September volumes.

Georgia’s ports handled more than 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units between July and September, GPA said Thursday. GPA’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.

But September volumes fell 7.6% to 436,279 TEUs as Hurricane Ian led GPA to suspend vessel service for nearly three days.

Golden Ray: Section seven separated from wreck

The St. Simons Sound Response team reports that cutting operations to separate Section Seven of the wreck of the capsized car carrier Golden Ray concluded earlier today (April 24).

Search ends for Port of Savannah longshoreman

The Coast Guard has ended the search for a Port of Savannah longshoreman who fell into the water early Tuesday.

The longshoreman was identified as 70-year-old Joe Williams, a resident of the greater Savannah area in Georgia. 

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified by the Georgia Port Authority at shortly before 3 a.m. Turesday that a man had fallen into the water while transiting the gangway to the Maersk Tukang and had not resurfaced.
