Georgia port tops US ro-ro gateways

The Port of Brunswick, Georgia, was the top U.S. port for vehicles in 2024.

Brunswick achieved a record year, totaling 901,912 units of autos and heavy equipment, up 13.3% and 160% y/y, respectively.

Georgia Ports President and Chief Executive Griff Lynch was quoted in a release as saying at the Brunswick State of the Port event that Colonel’s Island Terminal has become the nation’s busiest port for autos and heavy equipment, handling more than 2 million tons of roll-on/roll-off cargo in 2024.

Savannah containers up 11.4% in first-half FY2025

The Georgia Ports Authority said it handled more than 2.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units in the July-December fiscal year period, an increase of 11.4% or nearly 300,000 TEUs, year on year in the Port of Savannah.  

December volume grew 4.7% to more than 442,000 TEUs from December 2023.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen opens its new Brunswick terminal

In a January 21 ceremony, Wallenius Wilhelmsen executives hosted the official opening of the company’s newest global facility — its Brunswick, Ga., terminal, equipment processing center (EPC) and vehicle processing center (VPC).

Savannah container imports up 17%

Georgia Ports Authority marine terminals handled 450,700 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs), the second-busiest September on record, and an increase of 12% from the same month a year ago.

“In September, we saw front-loading of containers as customers worked to ensure cargo availability ahead of the holiday shopping season,” said GPA President and Chief Executive Griff Lynch, in a release. “With another 375,000 TEUs currently on the water, we’re expecting continued strength in October.”

Georgia’s Brunswick port expands ro/ro capacity

So what’s a port to do after it adds 120 paved acres to support its growing roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vehicle business?

Longshoremen strike could hit hybrid port operations in Georgia, North Carolina

A looming East and Gulf Coast dockworker strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association could be detrimental even to cargo container ports in right-to-work states such as Georgia and North Carolina, experts said.
