International Windship Association launches new survey to gauge perception of low/zero emission vessels and wind propulsion technology

London, 26th February 2025: With the number of ships using direct wind energy for propulsion increasing at a rate of knots, perceptions of wind propulsion technology are seemingly changing in the shipping industry, a sector which, until the middle of the 19th Century, relied solely on sail.

The potential of wind energy to rapidly decarbonise the shipping industry by enabling the realisation of low or zero emission vessels is well-known. However, barriers to the large-scale adoption of wind...

MOL participates in successful ammonia STS trial led by GCMD

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) participated in the successful ammonia STS trial led by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD).

In the absence of ammonia bunkering infrastructure, ship-to-ship (STS) transfers provide a close approximation of the bunkering process by replicating its essential steps.

“Translating the recommendations from our 2023 safety study into action through this pair of STS transfers demonstrates the essence of GCMD – operationalising pilots and trials to accelerate...

GCMD, NYK Line cooperate to address concerns of long-term, continuous biofuels use on ship operations

The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has teamed up with NYK Line to launch Project LOTUS (long-term impact of continuous use of biofuels on vessel operations).

This six-month project will trial the continuous use of a biofuels blend comprising 24% Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) and very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) onboard a short-sea vehicle carrier that will call at multiple ports.

The use of a vessel plying short-sea routes will allow regular access to fuels stored onboard...

MSC partners with Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation

MSC and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) have signed a five-year Impact Partnership agreement.

GCMD was formed as a non-profit organisation, is located in Singapore and seeks to assist the industry in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by developing guidelines for future fuels and testing low-carbon solutions.

MSC has pushed for the provision of a variety of alternative fuels and has set a precise aim of net decarbonisation by 2050.

As an Impact Partner, MSC will...
