India’s plans to regulate ocean freight rates come under fire

The Indian government is planning to force shipping lines and agents to provide “all-inclusive” freight rates.
The shipping ministry’s draft Merchant Shipping Bill 2020 says carriers involved with import, export or domestic transport “shall specify the all-inclusive freight in the bill of lading or any other transport document”.
And it adds: “No service provider or agent shall levy any freight charges other than the all-inclusive freight specified.”

Uncleared import boxes clogging India’s ports being used as ‘free warehousing’

There seems no end in sight to the congestion choking India’s ports.
According to the Container Shipping Lines Association of India (CSLA), tens of thousands of uncleared import containers are clogging supply chains amid the nationwide coronavirus lockdown.
CSLA executive director Sunil Vaswani said only 26,000 teu had been cleared from container freight stations (CFSs) near Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru port, leaving more than 100,000 teu lying uncollected.

India’s main ports at a standstill as imports clog storage and exports dry up

India’s 21-day coronavirus lockdown has caused severe cargo congestion at key ports and container freight stations.
As a result, Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and Cosco have all reportedly omitted calls at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Mundra Port, where uncollected import cargo is causing the backlog.
