A healthier planet depends on a greener supply chain

truck in front of windmills

Logistics is a dirty industry. The U.S. is one of the largest carbon emitters in the world, and the movement of vehicles is the number one source of those emissions. Freight trucks are responsible for about 23% of overall transportation in America, making these diesel-burning vehicles responsible for a whole lot of ozone-threatening emissions. Consumers are becoming more aware of both the urgency of climate change and the complexities of the supply chain, while transportation companies are...

World Leaders Must Arrest Arctic Climate Change Impacts

Sustainable shipping_arctic_

Reacting to news of the Arctic summer sea ice minimum reaching its second-lowest extent in the 42-year satellite record on September 15, and to recent reports of a polar heatwave, Greenland ice sheet’s loss of million tonnes of ice per day, the collapse of the Spalte glacier and Milne Ice Shelf, and the Arctic’s shift to a new climate, the Clean Arctic Alliance today called on world leaders to take urgent action to slow Arctic warming.

Massive Ice Chunk Breaks Off from Greenland Sparking Global Concerns

An enormous chunk of Greenland’s ice cap has broken off in the far northeastern Arctic, a development that scientists say is evidence of rapid climate change, says an article published in Midland Daily News.

How did it happen?

The glacier section that broke off is 110 square kilometers (42.3 square miles). It came off of the fjord called Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden, which is roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) long and 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide, the National Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland...

Glacier Disintegration Witnessed At Arctic’s Largest Remaining Ice Shelf

The red area in the optical satellite image shows the ice lost the past two years from the part of the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden Glacier called Spalte Glacier that calves into Djimphna Sund. An area of 113 km2 has been lost. Source: Copernicus Sentinel data modified by GEUS.

The Arctic’s largest ice shelf has detached a 113 km2 area. The last few years have been incredibly warm in northeast Greenland and this appears to be a progressive disintegration.

Annual end-of-melt-season area changes for the Arctic’s largest ice shelf in Northeast Greenland are measured from optical satellite imagery, and it shows that the area losses for the past two years (year 2018/2019 and year 2019/2020) both exceeded 50 km2. In total an area nearly twice that of Manhattan Island, New...

Amazon to power cargo jets with sustainable fuel

An Amazon Air plane takes off, view from behind as it gets airborne.

Amazon’s air cargo operation is contributing to meet the company’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2040 with an agreement to purchase up to six million gallons of jet fuel made from renewable sources.

The fuel blend, which includes feedstock of agricultural waste fats and oils, has the ability to reduce Amazon Air’s carbon emissions by 22%, Sarah Rhodes, vice president of Amazon Global Air said on a video describing the initiative and showing Prime planes being loaded with cargo and refueled
