Portrix Logistic Software and Searoutes offer forwarders accurate Co2 emissions data

From January Portrix Logistic Software (PLS) will integrate Searoutes’ Co2 emissions data into their Global Price Management (GPM) tool, a solution used by 12 of the Top 20 Freight Forwarders.
“Almost all our clients are today looking for detailed carbon footprint data due to many shippers wanting to make sustainable transportation choices alongside the normal costs, transit time and reliability factors.“ PLS’ CEO, Henning Voss says, adding “Searoutes was the perfect partner …

Searoutes enables shippers and forwarders to choose the greenest carriers

Using actual route data and vessel characteristics obtained from AIS (Automated Identification Systems) data, Searoutes goes beyond the standard methodology and provides CO2 emission calculations that accurately match the services operated by the carriers. Shippers now have an unprecedented decision-making tool to help them choose the services that emit the least CO2 and optimise their transport policy.
In the framework of the Green Deal, the European Commission estimates that a 90% …

China-Europe landbridge ‘will become one of the world’s major tradelanes’

DSV’s new intercontinental road bridge between China and Europe aims to take pressure off air freight and increasingly busy rail services – but offers less environmental benefits than rail.
Transit times are between 14 and 18 days, on trucks that are equipped with GPS tracking.
DSV told The Loadstar that, while it was unable as yet to provide figures on potential capacity, it had “a lot available” for the DSV Silkway Express, …

DHL hopes greener delivery service for London will float customers’ boats

DP-DHL has unveiled two initiatives that cut congestion and emissions, as part of its GoGreen initiative.
It has developed a Thames freight service for small packages going to central London, with final delivery by bike, and will be operated by Uber partner Thames Clipper Logistics.
While DHL has a canal delivery network in Venice, this will be its first high-speed river freight delivery service.
“With traffic and poor air quality becoming an increasing …

As forwarders help shippers to go greener, they also find it can be cheaper

Covid-19 might have put businesses’ environmental concerns on the back burner, temporarily, but the issue is not going away – and increasing numbers of shippers are asking their forwarders for help.
“Businesses have a lot to focus on right now,” said Frank Clary, vice president sustainability for Agility. “But coming out of Covid, none of these issues will have gone away.”
The good news is that cutting emissions often goes hand in hand …

Operators hiding transport emissions are delaying a ‘greener’ transport industry

Insufficient numbers of transport operators are disclosing their emissions, slowing down the process of ‘greening’ the industry.
Less than 20% of global freight emissions are reported, the majority of those by airlines, while road freight is barely touched on, according a new white paper by Smart Freight Centre and CDP.
Freight transport accounts for about 8% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and 11% of logistics sites, such as warehouses and ports, …

A small levy on pallets could revolutionise freight’s carbon credentials

Pallet users should pay a tax, according to a senior freight forwarder.
In a wide-ranging speech at the Logistics CIO Europe conference in Amsterdam this morning, Steve Walker, head of consultancy SWG and founder of SBS Worldwide, bought out by DSV in 2013, urged the industry to consider a charitable tax.
“I’d like to talk a little bit about carbon footprints, and the negative publicity we get for creating supposedly 3% of …

Battle to ban scrubbers heats up, despite claims of even lower-sulphur results

Scrubbers are removing more sulphur from exhaust gas emissions than actually required by the IMO 2020 sulphur cap regulations, according to the Clean Shipping Alliance (CSA) ship operator members.
On 1 January, the limit on sulphur emissions for maritime shipping was cut from 3.5% to 0.5%, but scrubber technology is capable of reducing the level to 0.1%, the maximum allowed for ships transiting designated SECA (sulphur emission control area) regions of …

IMO prepares to ban ships carrying HFO and has another look at scrubbers

The IMO’s sub-committee on pollution prevention and response (PPR) will this week finalise details of the ban from 1 March on the carriage of HFO (heavy fuel oil) on ships not fitted with scrubbers.
The agenda for the London meeting also includes scope for further work on revising the guidelines for the use of the exhaust gas cleaning system alternative to LSFO (low-sulphur fuel oil) in the light of the experience …
