DHL publishes its white paper on sustainable fuels for logistics

DHL has published a comprehensive white paper on sustainable fuels for logistics. And, with the new EC president planning a ‘Green Deal’, which will see transport emissions need to be cut by 90% in the next 30 years, it comes at a useful juncture. The paper explores the benefits of “alternative fuels”, although it notes that electric is “the technology choice of the transport sector” but is currently restricted to …

Users and polluters will pay in drive towards major cut in transport emissions

The transport sector will be forced to significantly cut emissions following the election of future European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
She has made a Green Deal the platform of her presidency.
But while there will be inevitable cost hikes and significant change, there are also opportunities – or commercial imperatives.
Transport accounts for 25% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, and it needs to reduce those by 90% by 2050.
“It’s not about …

Long Beach port terminals show off new zero-emissions equipment

The US port of Long Beach is showing off new hydrogen and electric-powered handling equipment in its bid to become the world’s first zero emissions sea port. A $5.3m grant allowed it to buy the equipment, in a state-wide initiative.

It comprises five vehicles: two battery-electric top handlers at SSA Marine’s Pacific Container Terminal at Pier J; and one fuel cell yard tractor, one battery-electric top handler and one …

Customers must play their part to create greener supply chains

Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in the logistics sector will only succeed if customers play their part.
Following an announcement this week by Kuehne + Nagel (K+N) of carbon-neutral services for less-than-containerload (LCL) shipments, The Loadstar spoke to Sophie Punte, executive director of Smart Freight Centre, about the offering.
“It’s always good news to see new services such as this.  If a customer wants to reduce GHGs and considers (as it …

CMA CGM says “no” to the Northern Sea Route

Just days after The Loadstar reporting on DNV/GL concerns that the shipping industry will not meet its 2050 emissions targets, CMA CGM has announced it will not use polar pathways as it looks to reduce its environmental footprint. DC Velocity reports that moving vessels through the routes that have emerged as a result of melting ice would increase the risks to marine wildlife and the chances of pollution in a region already struggling with climate change. …

DNV/GL predicts shipping industry will miss IMO 2050 CO2 reduction targets unless drastic action is taken

The shipping industry will miss the climate change reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) unless it ‘future-proofs’ newbuilds and continues to invest.
According to new research from classification society DNV/GL, the problem lies in the fact that no shipowner can invest in new technology today and be assured that that it won’t be obsolete within the space of a decade or two.
“Ships built today will have to compete …

Shipping starting to clean up its act, but aviation contrails still a concern

Emissions reporting has upped the ante – with container shipping statistics labelled as “quite favourable”, while the impact on climate change from aviation contrails will triple by 2050.
The EU has released its Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) data on vessel CO2 emissions. Containerships emit 28% of CO2 emissions from international shipping into and out of the EU, or a quarter of total shipping emissions.
“To put that in context, container shipping carries about two-thirds of...

Container shipping and charity set their combined sights on ‘greener’ seas

Charities and industry have aligned to urge governments to halt the destruction of marine habitats.
A coalition of charities, including ClientEarth, Coalition Clean Baltic, Oceana, Seas at Risk, and the WWF, says “urgent political will” is required to address the harm caused to marine life.
Oceana Europe executive director Lasse Gustavsson said: “We need to move from the virtual world to the real one.
“Theoretically, protected areas do nothing to preserve European seas from …
