Microsoft reportedly planning Gatik investment

In a tough fundraising environment for technology startups, Microsoft is reportedly nearing an investment in middle-mile autonomous trucking company Gatik.

Privately held Gatik, the middle-mile developer of autonomous trucking software, last raised $85 million in a Series B round in August 2021. Gatik’s Class 3-6 driverless box trucks operate revenue-generating routes in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Ontario, Canada.

When the rubber meets the road, how will autonomous trucks handle blowouts?

A mangled tire on the rim of a semi

Tire blowouts lead to dozens of highway deaths every year. For autonomous trucks, they pose a prickly problem: how to regain control without a human driver at the wheel.

“We can talk about redundancy in our sensors, machine-learning algorithms and all this fancy stuff until we’re blue in the face,” said Don Burnette, co-founder and CEO of Kodiak Robotics. “But at the end of the day, if you press the brake pedal and your tires don’t respond, it’s not useful.”

Kodiak is working with Bridgestone...

Truck Tech: Workin’ for a livin’ edition

This week, unmasked in Indy with snowplows, dump trucks, cranes and lots of step vans with an electric undercurrent; “EV-ready” tires; and Locomation keeps its biggest customer in the fold.

Not counting air travel to the Work Truck Week event in Indianapolis, the event was a maskless affair. While COVID impacts continue to snarl supply chains and spike commodity prices, the well-attended event focusing on Class 2-6 trucks at the Indianapolis Convention Center exhibited only a few individual...

Truck Talk: Cost of change edition

This week, we look at the costs associated with changing corporate captains; tiremakers rolling into trucking autonomy and electrification, and static-free AM/FM radio in the Freightliner Cascadia.

The cost of change

Leadership change can be expensive, both to remove a current CEO and to hire a new one. Here are three recent example as startups and early stage growth companies onboard operating experience in place of visionary or slow-moving leaders:

Lordstown Motors Corp.

The ouster of Steve...

FreightWaves Classics: No matter the size of vehicle, it needs tires

Missing a tire? (Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

What is a tire? “A tire is a ring-shaped component that surrounds a wheel’s rim to transfer a vehicle’s load from the axle through the wheel to the ground and to provide traction on the surface that the vehicle is on,” according to Wikipedia.

First the wheel

To understand the history of tires, the evolution of the wheel must be reviewed. One of man’s greatest inventions, the wheel dates back to the Neolithic era – 3500 BC – or prior to the Bronze Age. The first wheels were...

The blimp has a new passenger: Cooper Tires

I spent 30 minutes brainstorming catchy tire puns to introduce this next segment. I couldn’t think of anything good so I’ll cut to the chase and save the bad joke: Cooper Tire sold to Goodyear Tires in a deal worth about $2.8 billion. There’s a solid chance the deal won’t close until...
