Carriers installing solar panels to reduce costs, extend battery life

Rising costs on nearly every line of a carrier’s income statement have compressed truckload margins, forcing fleets to come up with ways to protect profits. The use of solar energy to power tractor cabs is one such solution. The improvement in solar panel technology in the past couple of years has led to increased adoption from carriers.

The flexible panels weigh less than 20 pounds and have an adhesive allowing them to be attached to the roof of a truck, where they capture the sun’s energy. The...

Economics 101: Driver pay will keep moving higher

Don't expect driver pay to slow when this freight cycle ends

Truckload carriers started raising driver pay nearly a year and a half ago as demand skyrocketed. Following the initial COVID outbreak, consumers changed their spending habits to ready themselves for a prolonged period of at-home living, which meant more trucks would be needed to bring more household and durable goods to market. The need for additional capacity has been tough to meet for an industry that perpetually struggles to recruit and retain drivers.

The pandemic exacerbated a shortfall on...

Solo drivers who opt out of using driver-facing cameras will earn a base rate of 58 cents per mile as well as accessorial pay.

The increase in base pay, roughly 5 cents...

‘Even stronger summer than last year’ sends driver pay higher

Driver pay still on the rise

Crete Carrier and Shaffer Trucking has announced a pay increase for drivers in its regional and national over-the-road fleets starting May 1.

New OTR drivers will now see pay rates between 59 and 65 cents per mile depending on their level of experience. The fleets’ pay program uses “practical miles,” which the company on Friday said results in “an average of 3-5% more than pay based on short route miles.” The increase applies to all solo, team and owner-operator drivers on per-mile pay plans in...

Commentary: It’s time to keep truckers safer

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

Truck drivers have always kept our economy moving. About 80% of all cargo in the United States is transported by trucks, and the trucking industry itself is responsible for roughly 6% of all full-time jobs in the country – employing about 3.5 million professional truck drivers. Without truckers, the American economy would grind to a halt.

No event in recent...
