Esbjerg Will Be The Home To Europe’s Largest Green Ammonia Production Facility

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has announced plans for what would be Europe’s largest green ammonia production facility with a 1 GW electrolyzer at Esbjerg, the Danish fund said Feb. 23, reports S&P Global.

Green energy projects

The Power-to-X facility will convert offshore wind power to ammonia used as fertilizer or as CO2-free fuel in the shipping industry, it said.

Excess heat from the electrolyzer plant will be used to provide heat for one third of households in Esbjerg, it added.

Manufacturing Alternative Fuel Without Environmental Footprint

An enormous engine that generally propels large ships across the sea is now being used by engineers for testing liquid ammonia, reports BBC.

The ground-breaking project

An enormous engine, at a test centre in Copenhagen is being supervised by engineers from a control room resembling a ship’s bridge.

Such an engine that would be propelling a large ship across the sea, is now being prepared to take part in a project where engineers want to see if it runs on liquid ammonia.

Green Ammonia To Power 30% Global Fleet by 2050

  • Renewable ammonia could eventually power 30% of the global maritime fleet.
  • Green ammonia would have a cost similar to today’s compliant oil-based bunkers.
  • Report estimates the cost of today’s conventional ammonia already comparable to VLSFO or MGO.
  • Leading engine manufacturers getting ready with their first engines for commercial use.

Green ammonia could eventually power 30% of the merchant fleet by 2050, reports Splash 247.
