Box Lines In Need of Regulatory And Customer Support

Credit: OneOcean

Container lines have begun shifting to more sustainable marine fuels with support from eco-conscious customers, but robust emissions regulations on global shipping are needed for sector-wide decarbonization, World Shipping Council CEO John Butler told S&P Global Commodity Insights, sources SP Global.

Largest Consumer

Among all maritime transportation sectors, box shipping is the largest consumer of bunker fuels, the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the top...

Industry to explore green methanol bunkering at the Port of Melbourne

Graphic: a molecule of methanol (CH3OH).

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Port of Melbourne, Maersk, ANL (a subsidiary of CMA-CGM), Svitzer, Stolthaven Terminals, HAMR Energy and ABEL Energy to explore the commercial feasibility of establishing a green methanol bunkering hub at the Port of Melbourne.

The collaboration will examine a potential project involving the transportation of green methanol from production sites in Bell Bay, Tasmania (ABEL Energy) [see e.g. “Shipp...

Greenwashing or Game Changer: Debunking Maersk’s Methanol Fuel

Credit: Pankaj Mishra/Pexels

A.P. Moller-Maersk appears to be planning a coup. It has placed an order for a containership that, based on its dimensions, is designed for the European feeder container trade, is capable of operating in the Baltic, which is not unusual and is planned to run on methanol, which is also not unusual, as reported by Splash247.

I am tipping my figurative hat to Maersk since they have been open about their participation in a group of Danish shipowners...

NYK takes delivery of a methanol-fuelled tanker

Methanol continues to be the front-runner as the fuel-of-choice for international shipping. The NYK Group, has reported that it has taken delivery of a methanol-fuelled chemical tanker, the Grouse Sun.

The ship has been equipped with a dual-fuel engine that, when burning methanol as fuel, can suppress the production of nitrous oxides by adding water to the fuel, which lowers the temperature during combustion.

“As a result, the vessel can...

Interest in an Australia fuel supply chain is intensifying.

Tokyo, Japan, headquartered Mitsui OSK Lines has announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a joint study to build a supply chain of renewable energy-derived ammonia (green ammonia), with a major Australian energy company Origin Energy.

Origin is pursuing a number of green ammonia and hydrogen projects, including a...

Green Fuels To Become The Future of Shipping Industry

  • Shipping accounts for almost 3% (and rising) of man-made carbon dioxide emissions.
  • The industry’s regulator set a series of emissions-cutting targets back in 2018.
  • Sustainable fuel sources include ammonia, LNG, biofuels, hydrogen, methanol, and nuclear.
  • MSC has started using biofuels in Rotterdam and Wartsila has begun testing ammonia.
  • IMO has targeted a 50% reduction in GHG emissions from 2008 levels by 2050.
  • Zero-emission vessels will need to start hitting the water by 2030.

According to an...

Is the New Clean Fuel Regulation Plan by Cruise Lines the Greenest Option?

Cruise Lines are working overtime to meet the new IMO 2020 sulphur regulations but in their rush, the path they have taken is not the greenest one and amounts to life support for one of the world’s dirtiest fuels, reports Taylor Dolven and Alex Harris for the Miami Herald.

What is it?

The new rule is designed to save lives. The heavy fuel oil that ships use — the cheap and dirty residue leftover at the bottom of a barrel of crude oil after all the gas products are made — is high in sulfur....
