MOL powers ahead into the green fuel revolution

Graphic: an artist’s impression of the concept design for an ammonia-powered capesize dry-bulker. Aside from ammonia-as-a-fuel, there are two further points of note. Firstly, at the bow of the vessel there are two hard-sails. These can reduce the vessel’s energy demand by about 5% each. The design also has two ammonia tanks on deck at the stern, which would be very useful as ammonia takes up more space than heavy fuel oil for the same energy content. Supplied by Mitsui OSK Lines.

UNCTAD calls for a smaller shipping carbon footprint

The UN Conference on Trade and Development has called for a smaller carbon footprint from the ocean shipping industry.

It has noted that the world’s ocean shipping fleet is ageing, which it describes as a “major concern” for the environment as older ships pollute more.

“Ships are getting older partly due to shipowners’ uncertainty about future technological developments and the most cost-efficient fuels, as well as about changing regulations and carbon prices. A new generation of low-carbon...

Shipping Australia welcomes news of EUR1.1 bn green methanol investment in Tasmania

Pictured: an artist’s impression of a green hydrogen production plant to be build by Spanish energy giant Iberdrola. Hydrogen can be produced in an environmentally friendly way by using renewably-source energy (such as from the sun, wind, or waves) to create electricity that is used to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. Hydrogen when combined with carbon, and oxygen can be used to create methanol (CH3-0H), an alcohol that can be used as a marine fuel. Graphic credit: Iberdrola.
