The new hub consolidates the Oslo-based carrier’s Southeast U.S. port calls and marks a move from an 85 acre Equipment Processing Center site in Pooler, Georgia and port calls in Ocean Terminal, Savannah to the new, customized 300 acre Brunswick facility.

Port of Savannah exports up, total cargo volume down

The Georgia Ports Authority on Wednesday mixed good and not-so-good news, touting a 21% year-over-year increase in exports as its headline figure in the January volumes report and following that with the concession that total cargo throughput decreased 11.5%.

The GPA said it handled 421,714 twenty-foot equivalent units in January, 55,000 fewer containers than in the first month of 2022. But it noted the 2023 total was 11.7% more than the pre-pandemic volume of 377,671 TEUs in January 2020.

Volume decline gives Port of Savannah operators a breather

The Georgia Ports Authority said the year-over-year 6.2% volume drop in November is not a bad thing.

“Container trade at U.S. ports is returning to a more sustainable growth pattern, which is a positive development for the logistics industry,” GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said in a Tuesday news release. “Along with the addition of more than 1 million TEUs of annual capacity, a slight reduction in demand will mean faster vessel service as we work to bring a new big ship berth online at...
