Alaska Air cargo profits set to blossom with international expansion

Alaska Airlines’ announcement Tuesday that it will redeploy Hawaiian Airlines widebody passenger jets for nonstop routes from Seattle to Asia and Anchorage, Alaska, paves the way for the company’s first meaningful participation in the international air cargo market and faster growth of its freight business.

Cargo is poised to deliver $150 million of new annual profit for Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK) on the heels of September’s $1.9 billion merger with Hawaiian, harnessing the capabilities of the...

DOT approves $1.9B Alaska Air, Hawaiian merger

Alaska Airlines expects to finalize its $1.9 billion merger with Hawaiian Airlines on Wednesday after the Department of Transportation cleared the transaction, the company said in a regulatory filing Tuesday.

DOT approval was the remaining hurdle for the merger. The Department of Justice last month quietly approved the transaction.

The combination of Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK) and Hawaiian Airlines (NASDAQ: HA) is important from a freight perspective because Alaska will take over cargo...

Hawaiian Airlines slowly adds freighters for Amazon business

Hawaiian Airlines has commenced operating a second Airbus A330-300 cargo jet for Amazon on a new route between New York’s JFK airport and the retail behemoth’s West Coast air logistics hub in San Bernardino, California, the company reported in quarterly earnings Tuesday.

Under a  transportation services agreement that kicked in last year, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) leases the aircraft from a dealer and transfers them to Hawaiian Airlines (NASDAQ: HA) to fly and provide routine maintenance. Hawaiian,...

Alaska Airlines to fly Amazon packages after completing Hawaiian buy

Alaska Air will take over cargo transportation for e-commerce giant Amazon when it concludes a deal announced Sunday to acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a stock-and-debt transaction worth $1.9 billion. Whether the Amazon transportation services agreement is eventually modified is unclear, but Alaska’s CEO said it could spur further investment in freighters.

“For now, nothing changes,” said Hawaiian Airlines spokesman Alex Da Silva in an email.

Hawaiian Airlines’ welcomes new Amazon revenue stream

The smooth debut of Hawaiian Airlines’ first freighter aircraft this month and the cash it, and sister aircraft, will generate from Amazon is a shot in the arm for an airline with losses that widened to $48.7 million in the third quarter from $9.3 million a year ago.

Hawaiian Airlines (NASDAQ: HA) began flying the Airbus A330-300 converted freighter  on Oct. 2 from the e-commerce giant’s air logistics superhub at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport to the new West Coast hub in San...

Hawaiian Airlines preps for October start of Amazon cargo service

Hawaiian Airlines received the first of 10 Airbus A330-300 converted freighters at its Honolulu base earlier this month and will begin flying it under contract to retail giant Amazon in October, CEO Peter Ingram said Tuesday during a phone briefing about the company’s second-quarter results.

The carrier will spend the next few months familiarizing air, ground and maintenance crews with the aircraft and implementing standard operating procedures, he said.

Hawaiian Airlines faces higher costs for training Amazon pilots

Hawaiian Airlines expects to incur extra costs this year for pilot training and is shifting its maintenance approach as it prepares to absorb 10 large Airbus freighters to be flown under a new contract with Amazon, executives said Tuesday.

The carrier set a fourth-quarter record with $34 million in cargo revenue — a paltry sum compared to the big U.S. international carriers with sales that were eight to 14 times as large. Even Alaska Airlines pulled in about $50 million in cargo revenue. But the...
