Despite red ink at Heartland, Morgan Stanley report relatively upbeat

With Heartland Express holding no conference call with analysts and recording a series of unprofitable quarters, outside reviews of the truckload carrier’s performance can be infrequent.

But the transportation team at Morgan Stanley led by Ravi Shanker has done so for Heartland’s first quarter. And despite another quarter of both operating and net losses at Heartland, the Wall Street investment firm, in a report released Tuesday, kept its rating of equal weight – EW – on the truckload carrier’s...

Losses at Heartland Express continue to mount

Truckload carrier Heartland Express reported a third-quarter net loss on Tuesday as it continues “to be hampered by a challenging freight environment.”

A $9.3 million net loss (12 cents per share) marked a fifth consecutive quarter in the red for the North Liberty, Iowa-based company when excluding one-time gains from real estate sales. Analysts were calling for just a 1-cent loss.

Lower gains on the sale of used equipment were a 1-cent headwind (assuming a normalized tax rate) versus the...

Marten’s earnings and almost all other key operating metrics down

(Editor’s note: A table posted yesterday by FreightWaves of key financial and operational data from Marten had errors. That table has been removed. The accompanying table is accurate).

Third-quarter earnings at Marten Transport were negative almost across the board, with little sign of a truckload market recovery visible in the numbers.

The company was profitable; it posted net earnings of 5 cents per share, down from 17 cents in the third quarter of 2023 and 10 cents per share in the second...

Heartland Express says recovery likely in 2025

Heartland Express reported a net loss for the second quarter on Tuesday, pointing to weak freight demand, excess capacity and higher expenses as the culprits.

The North Liberty, Iowa-based truckload carrier reported a $3.5 million net loss, or 4 cents per share. That was slightly better than the consensus estimate for a 5-cent-per-share loss but well off earnings per share of 10 cents in the 2023 second quarter. Lower gains on the sale of used equipment presented a 7-cent hurdle (assuming a...

Heartland Express books another net loss

Heartland Express said a prolonged period of soft freight demand, excess truck capacity and cost inflation were the reasons for a $15.1 million net loss in the 2024 first quarter.

On Tuesday, the North Liberty, Iowa-based truckload carrier reported a 19-cent-per-share loss for the period, 7 cents worse than the consensus estimate and 35 cents worse year over year (y/y). This was the company’s third straight net loss when excluding one-time gains from the sale of real estate. (It booked $25.6...

Heartland Express reports another tough quarter

Heartland Express reported net income of $5.1 million for the fourth quarter, which included the benefit of $25.6 million in gains from the sale of three terminals. Excluding the gains, which are unlikely to be replicated on an ongoing basis, the company again booked a notable loss.

“This challenging freight environment combined with two acquisitions in the prior year, have pressured our financial results to a level below our historical results and management expectations,” CEO Mike Gerdin said...
