M&A radar: Dancing in the dark with Geodis, Hellmann & Röhlig

“You can’t start a fire – You can’t start a fire without a spark – This gun’s for hire – Even if we’re just dancin’ in the dark.” – Bruce Springsteen, 1984.
The M&A trigger. When the talk gets really serious in my circles and the blind lead the blind, three names with completely different DNA, let alone size, often come up: France’s Geodis as well as Hellmann Worldwide Logistics and Röhlig Logistics both out …

On the wires: As all hell breaks loose, Kuehne + Nagel shows how it’s done

“Due to the uncertainties surrounding the further development of the Covid-19 pandemic and the current economic environment, the board of directors will propose to the annual general meeting 2020 to carry forward the retained earnings for the period ending December 31, 2019 to new account and not to resolve a dividend at this annual general meeting. Kuehne + Nagel thus further strengthens an already robust level of liquidity, adding support …

DSV Panalpina’s Sven Raudszus to become Hellmann’s regional CEO Asia Pacific

Another personnel departure from DSV Panalpina, this time to the benefit of Hellmann Worldwide.
From March, Panalpina’s chief executive Asia Pacific, Sven Raudszus, will become Hellmann’s regional chief executive Asia Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand. He will take over from 30-year veteran Mark Hellmann, who has decided to “pass on the leadership role to the next generation”.
Mr Raudszus has been in logistics for 25 years, holding various management positions in …

Market Insight EXCLUSIVE: Hellmann gets new global ocean head ex-Schenker, cuts COO post

It’s that time of the year when management changes are announced, and market talk from several sides is that there have been some truly enticing developments at Germany’s Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, which ended up affecting its top management structure.
By way of background: Hellmann has been in restructuring mode for years, and was one of the very first rumoured targets I heard about when I started monitoring the industry in late …

M&A radar: 3 targets for DSV Panalpina… why not 30? But only one stands out

For deal-making junkies, the most depressing side of the biggest logistics M&A story in October last year, when DSV was rejected by Ceva Logistics, was the dwindling number of targets left in the marketplace for the Danes.
On a quarterly call with analysts, I distinctively recall management’s defensive attitude at the time. As committed as ever, CEO Jens Bjørn Andersen and CFO Jens Lund were apparently so annoyed with some of …

Market Insight: Kuehne + Nagel rumoured to quicken its Asia restructure as trade wars bite

It doesn’t surprise you to hear that all the major 3PLs are tightening their belts in a market where uncertainty and headline/trade war risk reign. Right?
Then, it should surprise you even less that the world’s leading ocean freight forwarder, Kuehne + Nagel (K+N), is working hard to pursue operational efficiency, mainly in Asia, according to my trade sources, where changes in terms of operational structure and chain of control are …
