Despite a 24% Drop in 2022, Share Of Scrubber Ships Is Likely To Increase

In order to comply with sulphur emission limitations, ships must now utilise ultra- or low-sulfur fuel (such as ULSFO or VLSFO). Ships can still utilise heavy fuel oil (HFO), which is less expensive if they install a scrubber. However, it has shown that the price premium for VLSFO is not as great as first thought, as reported by BIMCO.

Rivertrace Introduces The SMART VISCO Main Engine Sensor

Before fuel oil is injected into the primary engines of big ships, the SMART VISCO sensor is intended to measure the temperature and viscosity of the fuel oil. The monitor then transmits this data via volt-free relay contacts on both analogue and digital outputs.

Direct indication

The SMART VISCO sensor measures all grades of HFO using ultrasonic guided wave technology. Due to the high frequency and speed of ultrasound, ambient vibration and flow speed have no impact on the measurements. The...

Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 76), 10 to 17 June 2021 (remote session)

Reduction of GHG emissions from shipping measures adopted

The MEPC adopted amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI that will require ships to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. These amendments combine technical and operational approaches to improve the energy efficiency of ships, in line with the targets established in the 2018 Initial IMO...

Survey Prerequisites for Vessels Carrying Heavy Fuel Oil

American Club has informed members that, as part of a concerted industry effort to ensure higher ship standards, the International Group of P&I Clubs was continuing to implement survey triggers for seagoing vessels of 10 years of age or more carrying HFO, says an article published on their website.

Who will be subject to survey?

As a consequence, all sea-going vessels aged 10 years or more which have carried heavy HFO as cargo within the previous 12 months will be subject to condition survey,...

KSS Line – HHI VLGC Contracts

Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea has won an order from compatriot KSS Line to build two dual-fuelled VLGCs, says a press release published on KSS Line website.

About the vessels

The 86,000 cu m ships – costing a combined $162m – will deliver in the first half of 2023 and will be able to run off LPG or normal bunker fuel says, KSS Line.

Hyundai Heavy and its affiliate yards have won 34 out of 58 LPG carrier orders made around the world so far this year.

Next Port of Call – The Methanol Bunkering Station

While making the switch to clean burning methanol, some changes onboard, conversion is a viable option, as the Stena Germanica ro-pax ferry – successfully running on methanol for the last six years – has proved, says a press release published in Wartsila website.

Clean burning, cheap to produce, widely available, and with the potential to be 100% renewable – methanol checks plenty of boxes for the shipping industry as it wrestles with the increasingly pressing need to decarbonize. While making...

Should Ship Owners Be Wary Of Low Quality VLSFO?

In 2019, the shipping industry was facing somewhat different pressures than what it faces today. With IMO 2020 on the horizon, the industry was waiting with nervous anticipation to see the impact of the new regulation, reports Manifold Times.

VLSFO Quality

Some predicted momentous disruption – from the availability, and cost of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), to the price spread for heavy fuel oil (HFO) and scrubbers – the debate around the most economically and environmentally viable...

Why Scrubber Ships Moving From Two To Five Fuel Types?

Copenhagen-listed shipowner TORM on Monday (1 March) reported not all ports allowing the use of 3.5% HFO with scrubbers for its EGCS-equipped vessels, reports Manifold Times.

Solution

As such, its solution is to move from using two bunker fuel types onboard scrubber-equipped ships to five different fuel types.

To date, the company has installed 46 scrubbers. The remaining four are expected to be installed in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, including the two scrubbers for the LR2 newbuildings.

A...

Sulfur Cap Transition ‘Extremely Smooth,’ Says IMO

  • New limits on fuel oil sulfur brought about a 70% cut in total sulfur oxide emissions from shipping, ushering in a new era of cleaner air by using less polluting fuels.
  • One year on, indications are that the transition has been extremely smooth, a testament to the preparations of all stakeholders prior to the new rules entering into force.

The International Maritime Organization on Thursday (28 January) said one year from implementing the IMO 2020 sulphur cap, indications are that the...
