Trials for world’s first zero emission, ‘drop in’ HFO completed

GoodFuels Marine along with bulker and tanker owner and operator Norden A/S, has successfully completed trials of the world’s first zero emission, ‘drop in’ Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO).

The Bio-Fuel Oil (BFO) is able to deliver almost zero carbon and Sulphur Oxide (SOx) emissions without requiring engine modifications. The trials were performed on the 37,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) Handysize product tanker vessel Nord Hihglander, which was operating in the North and Baltic Seas.

The trials indicated the...

MEPC 73 marks progress towards Arctic HFO ban

IMO’s MEPC 73, which concluded on Friday, considered impact assessment methodology ahead of sending the ‘Scope of Work’- which sets out the work to be done to reduce the risks associated with the use and carriage of heavy fuel oil as fuel by ships in Arctic waters, including the proposal for a ban, to the on Pollution Prevention and Response subcommittee (PPR6) in February 2019.

IMO Must Renew Commitment To Arctic Shipping Heavy Fuel Oil Ban – HFO-Free Arctic

hfofreearctic

As the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 73) gathers in London, the Clean Arctic Alliance called on member states to “renew their commitment” so that a ban on the use and carriage of polluting heavy fuel oil from Arctic shipping can be adopted in 2021.

At MEPC 72, in April 2018, the majority of IMO members agreed in principle to this ban. Heavy fuel oil (HFO) is back on the agenda this week, when MEPC 73 will examine an impact assessment...

Focus on Arctic HFO ban ahead of MEPC 73

As the MEPC 73 starts today in London, the Clean Arctic Alliance calls the member states to reaffirm their commitment towards a ban on the use and carriage of polluting heavy fuel oil from Arctic shipping from 2021.

At MEPC 72 most of IMO members agreed in principle to this ban. Heavy fuel oil (HFO) is back on the agenda for MEPC 73, which will examine an impact assessment methodology, which establishes the work to be done to reduce the risks associated with the “use and carriage of heavy fuel...

Report: Switching to clean fuel in Arctic costs a glass of wine

It would cost passengers just the price of a glass of wine a day if cruise ships would stop burning highly polluting heavy fuel oil (HFO) in the fragile Arctic environment, according to a new report from green transport group Transport & Environment. The report resulted from analysis of the impact on the cruise ship ‘MS Rotterdam’ had it switched to marine gas oil (MGO), during three summer trips to the Arctic in 2018.

This study finds that the likely cost impact of Arctic HFO ban will be small...
