Carriers defend new street turn charges shippers say are ‘insane’

Shipping lines have defended what shippers described as “insane” charges for ‘street turns’, claiming customers will ultimately save on costs.
Last week, shippers slammed the charges announced by ZIM, HMM, SM Lines and Maersk of between $40 and $75 for containers which are fully used in both directions.
However, a spokesperson for ZIM said: “ZIM is affording truckers of its cargo the option of street turn moves as this helps reducing congestion and emissions.
“The related charge …

With new ULCVs on the horizon, another Asia-Europe loop was ‘inevitable’

With its member lines receiving a large number of newbuild ULCVs this year the addition of a seventh loop between Asia and North Europe by the Ocean Alliance was “inevitable” said Drewry.
While the 2M rival alliance has opted to accommodate six extra newbuild ULCVs into its network revamp by slowing vessel speeds and cutting port calls in order to allow more buffer time in schedules and thereby to improve reliability, …

Round trips, or street turns, reduce congestion, emissions, demand for container and chassis supply and cut costs. But, …

KDB to entirely reform HMM

Korea Development Bank (KDB) has vowed to carry out intense reform of Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) to normalize the ailing shipping firm’s management. KDB is HMM’s largest shareholder with a 13.13 percent stake.

The decision came after a due diligence submitted by Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers, which claimed HMM could be “capital impaired next year and the bailout requires at least 6 trillion won ($5.32 billion) by 2022.”

The due diligence also includes HMM’s debt, currently estimated at 2.54...

Korean maritime transport industry suffers

Despite a boom in the Korean transportation sector, sales of the Korean maritime transport industry plunged more than 10% in 2017.
