While many of the documents and proposals are at an early stage, if you are interested in how much tax you pay, when you have to pay it and how much...

Brexit shambles not fit for (trade) purpose, says customs consultant

Rolling out the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) in time for Brexit was a “technological marvel” – but a trading disaster.
Chairman of customs consultancy ASM Peter MacSwiney said the viability of the new border control system for coordinating the movement of vehicles epitomised the model of government led by Boris Johnson.
“Ours is a government with a three-word policy, and that policy has been ‘get Brexit done’, and that’s what Boris did,” Mr MacSwiney told The …

Whitehall unveils Brexit border operating model – but the tech may prove tricky

The UK logistics industry has welcomed more clarity in the government’s new border operating model, but has warned that many details are still lacking, making the timeframes “extremely challenging”.
The 206-page document, published yesterday, outlines protocols for borders and differing commodities, but a lot relies on new technology, which is either not completed or not currently compatible with industry systems.
However, the British International Freight Association (BIFA) welcomed an...

Freight operators welcome delay to HMRC Transitional Simplified Procedures

Freight operators have welcomed HMRC’s decision to delay implementation of the Transitional Simplified Procedures for customs (TSP) in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Announced in February, the TSP matches trader numbers against trailers and postpones payment of import duties – but only for ro-ro traffic.

Exporters say simplified customs plan won’t reduce congestion around Dover

Changes to UK customs procedures in the event of a no-deal Brexit have not eased exporters’ concerns over major delays at the UK’s main ro-ro port of Dover.
Last week, HMRC announced simplified customs procedures for imports if the UK left the EU without a deal, but exporters have told The Loadstar any hopes Whitehall had that this would reduce congestion on roads near Dover were misplaced.
The FTA’s head of multimodal policy, Alex Veitch, …
