Fuel supply and infrastructure: Three lessons from Ship Energy Summit

The second of 2021’s Ship Energy Summits was held online between 7 and 8 September, gathering shipping stakeholders to try and answer one of the industry’s most asked questions: how to support the sector’s energy transition.

While the first meeting focused more on what kind of technologies are available to the industry, the second summit explored the practical side of operations, finding out who will supply the new marine fuels and what the infrastructure will look like.

In the fuel supply panel...

Talking alternative fuels: Topics from Ship Energy Summit

Time and time again the shipping industry is spotlighted for its negative environmental contributions when it comes to emissions and fuel type. This has seen the industry working towards a cleaner future, with many companies investing in new technology to assist reducing emissions, greener fuel alternatives and hybridising their vessels.

One fuel which is making headway within the industry is methanol. This is usually produced from stem-reforming natural gas to create synthesis gas, which when...

UK DfT investigates young people’s perception of shipping

The UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) published a research paper on the perception young people have of the maritime industry on 31 August.

Commissioned by the DfT, the research was born out of the industry’s struggle to attract new talent, which consequently reduces the availability of skills within the industry and hinders the sector’s economic potential.

The research, which aimed to understand what kind of maritime knowledge young people have and what barriers prevent more...

Is methanol the best fuel to meet shipping’s green goals? ICCT Q&A

Maersk announced the world’s first methanol-powered shipping vessel in June, representing a steppingstone towards the industry’s goals to reduce its environmental impact.

The company said at the time that it believes that green methanol is the fuel of the future. Could vessels such as this one, which is currently in development, be the next big thing for the industry?

Founded in 2001, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent, non-profit organisation that aims...

Post-Brexit: measuring the impact on UK ports half year later

In June 2021, the British Ports Association (BPA) published a toolkit to help ports and maritime businesses continue to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as challenges posed by the implementation of Brexit, which took place on 1 January.

“Ports are today facing a new world and new challenges,” says Zeina Sawaya-Melville, who is an independent port consultant and the toolkit’s author. “Brexit is quickly changing trading relationships [and] the pandemic has accelerated the 4th industrial...

Challenging the UK to deliver green ports in Scotland

The Scottish Government recently asked the UK Government to cooperate more when it comes to the delivery of green ports, claiming the lack of cooperation puts Scottish ports at a competitive disadvantage compared with the rest of the country.

“Green ports will help us create a sustainable economy that promotes good jobs and supports our important net-zero commitments,” Scottish Trade Minister Ivan McKee wrote to the Scottish Secretary of State Alister Jack.

“The Scottish Government remains...

Bonnie Green: Ship Technology Global Issue 78

“The time to act is now if we are to solve shipping’s climate challenge.”

A.P. Moller-Maersk CEO Søren Skou technically isn’t wrong. And, it’s fantastic to see so many companies – not just in shipping – seriously looking at their environmental impact. But let’s be honest: the time to take action actually passed us by some time ago, didn’t it.

The recent IPCC report was a sobering look at how human activity is impacting the planet, and shipping, like many other industries, has to shoulder a large...

Maersk’s methanol mission: a greener future for shipping

Acting as the backbone for global trade, shipping provides essential products, materials, and services to millions around the world. However, the environmental effects of shipping are highly detrimental to the environment with the industry being responsible for more than 18% of some air pollutants.

Alongside this, The International Maritime Organisation has estimated that CO2emissions from shipping were equivalent to 2.2% of the global human-made emissions in 2012, which are expected to rise...
