NY Waterway founder and president Arthur E. Imperatore, Sr., an entrepreneur who built a complete New York City commuter ferry system, died Nov. 18 at the age of 95.

Imperatore’s career spanned more than seven decades and included various ventures from mining to real estate, from sports teams to transportation. He founded NY Waterway in 1986 in Weehawken, New Jersey and built it into a mass transit system which has transported almost 300 million people to date.

A NY Waterway ferry crew picked up a pilot after a helicopter crash in the Hudson River Wednesday, the latest in a long line of rescues for the cross-river commuter service

The ferry Gov. Thomas Kean was passing close by when the helicopter operated by Zip Aviation lost altitude and fell into the river after refueling at the West 30rd Street heliport around 1:20 p.m.

Tappan Zee Bridge goes out with a bang

The eastern anchor span of New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge dropped into the Hudson River Tuesday with an explosive demolition, soon to clear the way for mariners to navigate without restrictions.

The controlled drop was executed at 10:52 a.m., when charges blew out the supports and the 672’ bridge deck and superstructure fell to the river bed, on the eastern side of the navigation channel.

Explosive end for old Tappan Zee Bridge

The main channel in New York’s Hudson River will be closed to traffic Saturday morning while the remaining eastern span of the old Tappan Zee Bridge is demolished with explosive charges, Coast Guard and state transportation officials say.

Tappan Zee Constructors has been dismantling the 63-year-old bridge since completing the 3.1-mile, $4 billion Mario M. Cuomo bridge last year, shipping out the old steel and concrete for recycling or emplacement on artificial fishing reefs off Long Island.
