National Guard units from all over the U.S. are heading to North Carolina to assist victims of Tropical Storm Helene.

Ports assess damage after Francine lashes Louisiana

Ports along the Gulf Coast are assessing damage after Hurricane Francine smashed into Louisiana on Wednesday evening.

The storm — which made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane but is now downgraded to a tropical depression — hit Terrebonne Parish before moving into Mississippi, the National Hurricane Center said. Some ports along the Gulf Coast were evaluating conditions before fully opening Thursday.

Hurricane watch issued for Louisiana as Tropical Storm Francine intensifies

A tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico could develop into a hurricane that threatens southern Louisiana and northern coastal Texas on Wednesday.

On Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch from Cameron eastward to Grand Isle in Louisiana. The NHC states in its fourth public advisory that a tropical storm watch has been issued east of High Island, Texas, to Cameron and from Grand Isle to the mouth of the Pearl River, including Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

Ports in Houston and Galveston remain closed in wake of Hurricane Beryl

Ports in Houston and Galveston, Texas, remained closed Tuesday after Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday morning. 

Port Houston officials posted on X that they will “continue to assess and repair damage” and send an update at 4 p.m. Tuesday on whether the port will resume cargo operations on Wednesday.

The storm brought torrential rains, flooding and 94 mph winds that knocked out power to more than 2.5 million homes and businesses in southeast Texas.
