Hyzon becomes latest SPAC-backed startup to crash

Even with a stream of positive news releases, the signs and warnings for Hyzon were there. Now reality has arrived: Fuel cell developer Hyzon Motors is the latest startup to give up after going public during the SPAC craze of 2020-2021.

Hyzon fought through numerous obstacles, including a $25 million fine from the Securities and Exchange Commission related to fabricating orders for hydrogen-powered commercial trucks in China.

The spinoff of Singapore’s Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies chased the...

White Paper: Battery electric vs. hydrogen fuel cell vs. HVO – which is the winning technology?

Various types of heavy-haul transportation claim to be environmentally friendly, but just how resilient one type of technology or fuel might be depends on a range of factors – such as the GHG emissions associated with producing the required fuel and whether there is a feasible chance that this type of fuel can meet the overall transportation demand.

In this white paper, Einride compares the three most talked-about alternatives to diesel – battery electric, HVO biofuel, and hydrogen fuel cell –...

Nikola gets boost to European fuel cell truck business

A German provider of integrated energy solutions has signed a letter of intent to purchase 100 hydrogen-powered trucks from Nikola Corp. It is the startup’s first prospective European customer for Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicles.

A letter of intent is not the same as a purchase order. But it boosts Nikola’s manufacturing joint venture with Iveco in Ulm, Germany. That’s where the trucks would be built for delivery in 2024 and 2025.

GP Joule, based in Reussenkoege, Germany, wants the...

Hyundai’s Xcient positioned for instant US fuel cell truck leadership

Like a political candidate running unopposed, Hyundai Motor will passively assume U.S. leadership in hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks next year when 35 Xcient models arrive in California.

Hyundai has competition in the zero-emission trucking space. But none is likely to match the South Korean automaker. It has worked on fuel cell technology since 1998. And it and fielded its first fuel cell vehicle, a 160-kilowatt bus, in 2005.

The Xcient essentially doubles the 90-kW fuel cell stack technology...

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach on Friday began charging diesel-powered drayage trucks $10 per unit entering and leaving the ports with proceeds going to a Clean Truck Fund that will help pay for zero-emission trucks and infrastructure.

The Clean Truck Rate is charged per 20-foot-equivalent unit hauled by a diesel truck. A typical 40-foot container would cost $20 to move. Electric trucks and certain alternative fuel vehicles are exempt.

Zero-emission trucks like the battery-electric...

Traton Group, which now includes Navistar International, is upsizing its planned spending on battery-electric trucks to nearly $3 billion between now and 2026 and says some applications of hydrogen-powered fuel cells might make sense, a softening of its batteries-only stance.
