US, Canada to form task force to get locomotive emissions to net zero

The U.S. and Canadian governments plan to work together to reduce the railway sector’s greenhouse gas emissions via a task force that will explore accelerating the use of zero-emissions locomotive technologies, leaders from both countries announced at the COP28 United Nations climate change conference in Dubai.

The Rail Decarbonization Task Force will have three goals, according to a Wednesday joint statement from U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete...

CPKC, coal producer Teck to test hydrogen-fueled locomotives

Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Teck Resources will conduct a pilot program starting in early 2024 in which coal used in steel production will be transported from Teck’s mines in southeastern British Columbia to western ports using CPKC’s hydrogen locomotives.

The companies also said they have entered into a long-term rail service agreement that will run until the end of 2026. The agreement builds on existing services, according to a Thursday release.

“CPKC is proud to work with organizations...

Wabtec VP: US needs to invest in hydrogen rail technologies

Freight railroads have a reputation for being a good choice for shippers seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with railroads representing only 1.9% of transportation-related GHG emissions, according to the Association of American Railroads, quoting data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

But are there ways to make freight railroads even more environmentally friendly? One avenue some are exploring is through locomotive technology and seeing what technologies can decrease...

BNSF, Progress Rail, Chevron to demonstrate hydrogen-powered locomotive

BNSF, Chevron U.S.A. and Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail have each signed a memorandum of understanding to demonstrate a locomotive powered by hydrogen fuel cells in order to confirm the feasibility and performance of hydrogen fuel to power locomotives.

The MOU has three objectives. If successful, the demonstration would be a step toward providing a lower-emitting alternative to diesel-fueled locomotives, the three companies said in a Tuesday release.

“BNSF is pleased to collaborate with...

Canadian Pacific has received a CA$15 million (US$12.1 million) grant from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to expand its hydrogen locomotive program.

The grant, announced Tuesday, will increase the number of hydrogen locomotive conversions from one locomotive to three, and it will add more hydrogen production and fueling facilities.

CP’s hydrogen locomotive program, launched in December 2020, seeks to demonstrate and evaluate the technical performance of hydrogen-powered locomotives and...

Report: Batteries usually more feasible, environmentally beneficial than green hydrogen

An Earthjustice report says battery electric is almost always better than green hydrogen.

There’s a lot of talk about using hydrogen as a fuel to decarbonize the transportation industry. The hydrogen aircraft market could be worth $174 billion by 2040, according to Gediminas Žiemelis, chairman of the board of Avia Solutions Group.

But, currently 99.8% of hydrogen that’s produced is made using fossil fuels, according to an Earthjustice report released Tuesday.

While green hydrogen, which does not produce greenhouse gas emissions nor use fossil fuels, may be a useful fuel to reduce...

Association of American Railroads weighs in on climate policy

The AAR released policy proposals addressing climate change.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) published a white paper with policy proposals that address climate change Monday, focusing on collaboration, technology, reducing emissions and simplifying processes.

Railroads move about 40% of U.S. long-distance freight volume, according to the paper, which is more than any other mode of transportation. Despite high volumes, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that rail only contributes to 2.1% of U.S. transportation-related greenhouse gas...

Canadian Pacific launches hydrogen-powered locomotive project

CP is starting a pilot project to build a hydrogen-powered locomotive.

Canadian Pacific (NYSE: CP) is starting a pilot project to develop a hydrogen-powered locomotive.

As concerns for the environment rise, freight transporter companies face increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If successful, Canadian Pacific (CP) would be the first company in North America to run a line-haul hydrogen-powered locomotive, a release announcing the project on Friday said.

One of CP’s line-haul locomotives will be retrofitted with hydrogen fuel cells and battery...
