How hydrogen could help decarbonize transportation — Net-Zero Carbon

The logo for FreightWaves' Net-Zero Carbon show has green trees with a black background.

On this episode of Net-Zero Carbon, Danny Gomez, managing director of financial and emerging markets at FreightWaves, is joined by Mike Hopkins, CEO of Bakken Energy, to discuss the basics of hydrogen and why hydrogen is an attractive fuel source for hard to abate emissions in long-haul trucking.

About 95% of hydrogen produced in the U.S. today is considered gray hydrogen, which is made by natural gas reforming, according to the Department of Energy. This process produces hydrogen and releases...

Canadian airport betting big on hydrogen

A birds eye view of a terminal at the Edmonton International Airport shows several airplanes surrounding the building.

Airlines and fuel providers are experimenting with using hydrogen to power aircraft and vehicles, and Edmonton International Airport (EIA) aims to be “on the leading edge of that,” according to VP Myron Keehn.

“I think hydrogen for aircraft is coming quicker than we think,” Keehn, the Canadian airport’s vice president of air service, business development, environmental, social and governance, and government relations, told FreightWaves.

He predicted the Edmonton area would be using hydrogen...

Could blue hydrogen accelerate transition to green?

AskWaves explores whether hydrogen has to be green right away?

Every mode of transportation is considering hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels such as e-methanol to decarbonize freight. But there is debate about whether hydrogen needs to be green right away or if the industry should use blue hydrogen until the cost of green hydrogen becomes more economical.

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity that powers electrolyzers to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Blue hydrogen is produced using natural gas reformation, but its carbon dioxide...
