Trailer orders slow in January, suggest a return to normalcy

Trailer orders in January fell back significantly from a huge December. But the numbers suggest a return to normal order patterns after more than two years of disruption.

Manufacturers have plenty of pending orders to build, both trucks and trailers.

“Orders continue to flow in and we still have pent-up demand to fill,” Chris Hammond, executive vice president of sales for Great Dane, told FreightWaves.

“We are seeing some customers defer ordering in 2023 as the economy begins to slow down as talk...

December trailer orders 2nd highest on record

Trailer manufacturers posted 57,300 orders in December, the second-highest monthly intake since ACT Research began tracking in 1996. The volume appeared to be a catch-up after OEMs blocked many orders from April to August because they lacked pricing visibility.

“I cannot speak for other OEMs. However, our higher booking in December was driven by the later opening of the order books as we awaited required quoting information from the supply base,” Sean Kenney, chief sales officer for Hyundai...

External pressures drag out typical cycle for trailer orders

Vans with rear doors open for insopection ata Ritchies Brothers auction in Houstonn

It may or may not be a fundamental change, but the fall order season for trailer orders isn’t playing out like anything resembling the traditional opening of orderbooks.

Even the data analysts who track the industry landed miles apart on bookings in September.

ACT Research said its preliminary reporting showed net trailer orders were 25,700 units, up about 45% from August but around 10% lower than the same month last year.

FTR Transportation Intelligence pegged September bookings at 12,500, down...

Perfuming pigs: Fleets refurbishing older trailers while waiting for new

With the continuing supply chain snarl causing manufacturers to accept only limited orders for new trailers, fleets are cleaning up older parked equipment used for storage to meet their immediate needs.

“I have heard from multiple dealers that their customers are investing large amounts to return trailers to active service from storage,” Sean Kenney, chief sales officer for Hyundai Translead, told FreightWaves.

It might be a move of last resort for fleets trying to keep up with easing but still...

November trailer orders rebound but supply chain issues are likely worsening

Trailer orders rebounded in November as manufacturers took orders that will push backlogs into the third quarter of 2022. Is the supply chain improving or is it just wishful thinking?

“I think this is a blip,” David Giesen, vice president of sales at Wisconsin-based Stoughton Trailers, told FreightWaves. “The supply chain really hasn’t improved, and in some cases, it has worsened.”

Trailer connectivity tech advances as supply shortages crimp production

As Class 8 truck production goes, so go the trailers they pull.

Both are bogged down by component supply shortages. Sure, there’s the persistent  semiconductor shortage that many expected would be a memory by now. But supply constraints only begin with missing microchips.

“While ‘semiconductors’ has become the generic reference for the supply chain’s shortcomings, in actuality there are scores of parts that continue to be impacted,” said Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research.

April trailer orders slide but blow away near-zero builds a year ago

New trailer orders slid to their lowest in several months in April as manufacturers warned fleets away from booking orders they cannot build for the rest of the year.

Preliminary reports from trailer manufacturers compiled by ACT Research point to 14,400 new trailer orders in April, 52% below March. But reservations soared 3,600% above April 2020 when practically no trailer orders were placed because of pandemic shutdowns.

The year-over-year number is all but meaningless in predicting the...
