A winter storm that began Wednesday has been spreading sleet and freezing rain from Texas to the mid-South and Ohio Valley. These regions remain at risk for additional accumulations Thursday.

Major winter storm now spreading across Northeast

A powerful winter storm that began Tuesday night produced freezing rain and heavy snow the past two days from the Southwest to the Great Lakes.

Thick ice weighed down tree limbs and power lines, especially in parts of the mid-Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley. As of 8 a.m. Friday, more than 350,000 customers had no electricity in eight states, from Texas to New York. Almost 132,000 of those customers were in Tennessee, with most outages in the Memphis area, according to PowerOutage.us.

Eastern US braces for strong weekend winter storm

Transportation crews in the South have been deploying their brine trucks to get ready for an approaching winter storm. Spraying brine before a winter storm begins can prevent snow and rain from freezing on the roads or at least reduce the amount of time it takes for the freezing to occur.
