States of emergency declared ahead of major winter storm

The governors of at least three states issued states of emergency Tuesday, just ahead of a major winter storm threatening areas from the Plains to the Northeast.

The storm is forecast to dump heavy snow in some places over the next two days, while other places will see sleet and freezing rain, leading to very icy roads. The storm will also generate strong winds and periods of blizzard conditions.

18-wheeler slides off icy North Carolina overpass

As a winter storm settled into the Southeast on Sunday, a truck driver in North Carolina lost control on an icy overpass, sending the tractor-trailer over a guardrail.

Motorists are advised to avoid area of Hwy 147 & 15-501 northbound due to tractor trailer accident. Lanes will be shut down for several hours. Alternate exits are I-85 N. and Morreene Road. pic.twitter.com/RGScaC8FpZ

Truckers to face icy roads in Pacific Northwest

Truckers will hit very slick conditions Tuesday as snow, sleet and freezing rain hit the Pacific Northwest.

The National Weather Service has winter weather advisories in place in central and eastern Washington as well as western Montana. There are no alerts for northern Idaho, but this may change as the day progresses.

At least eight people have died in crashes across North Texas after freezing rain iced over highways early Thursday.
