Limited shore access hits seafarers happiness

Restrictive port policies are seen as a major reason why the Seafarers Happiness Index has seen its first downturn for four quarters. The Mission to Seafarers has just published the results of the latest survey. They reveal a fall in happiness in several areas of seafaring life to 6.91 in Q4 2024, from 7.16 in Q3 of last year.

The Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) is a quarterly survey conducted by the Mission to Seafarers, in partnership with Idwal and NorthStandard, and supported by Inmarsat.

Slight uptick in seafarers’ happiness

The latest Seafarers Happiness Index report from the Mission to Seafarers reveals a mixed but somewhat more positive picture of seafarers’ well-being, with the happiness index increasing slightly to 6.99 in second quarter 2024, marginally up from 6.94 in the first quarter.

However, the seafarers happiness survey results reveal concerns over the emergence of two classes of life at sea for seafarers. There are suggestions of a “digital divide” when it comes to accessing the benefits of modern...

Based on a survey undertaken with the support of the Standard Club and Idwal, the new report shows an overall fall in seafarer happiness to...

Seafarers Happiness Index sinks to eight-year low

The latest Seafarers Happiness Index report, published today by the Mission to Seafarers, reveals the lowest levels of seafarer satisfaction for eight years, with the index’s measure of overall happiness decreasing from 6.41 to 5.85 and levels dropping across all categories.
