Longshoremen strike could hit hybrid port operations in Georgia, North Carolina

A looming East and Gulf Coast dockworker strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association could be detrimental even to cargo container ports in right-to-work states such as Georgia and North Carolina, experts said.

Talks between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance, which negotiates on behalf of management of the ports, terminals and shipping lines, have stalled. No new contract talks have been scheduled.

The six-year ILA master contract covering about 25,000 dockworkers and...

Could East Coast port strike spread to West Coast?

Could a work stoppage by East Coast longshoremen spread to West Coast ports?

That’s the nontrivial question facing shipping lines, terminal operators and the country at large as U.S. East and Gulf Coast port employers nervously wait out an Oct. 1 strike deadline set by the International Longshoremen’s Association.

The current six-year ILA master contract covering dockworkers and other port employees from Maine to Houston expires Sept. 30. No contract talks have been scheduled.

The primary issues...

ILA readiness to strike highest since 2012

A FreightWaves article on Tuesday discussed the circumstances leading to the International Longshoremen’s Association’s (ILA) last multicoast strike in 1977. We noted how the ILA — which represents dockworkers at ports along the East and Gulf Coasts — is one of the less strike-prone unions in the industry.

That the ILA tends to favor timely resolutions over walkouts is all the more obvious when it is compared to the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), which represents...

Half a century later, ILA returns to strike mode

The threat of a multicoast strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) could soon become a reality.

The current labor contract between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) expires at the end of September, with the ILA maintaining that it will not accept any extension of the contract nor any potential mediation by the federal government.

In other words, the ILA is set to swap pallet jacks for picket signs come Oct. 1.

The ILA represents roughly 70,000 dockworkers...

U.S. port strike fears stoked as ILWU pledges solidarity with ILA

Raising the specter that a threatened Maine to Texas U.S. port strike could ratchet into something even further reaching, Willie Adams, U.S. West Coast dockworkers’ union president on Friday wrote International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) president Harold J. Daggett reaffirming his union’s support for the ILA in its negotiations with United States Maritime Alliance (USMX).

“As you continue negotiating and move close to the expiration of your contract, the ILWU stands in solidarity with the...

Creditor challenges bankruptcy plan of ILWU dockworkers union

One of the world’s largest and highest-profile dockworker unions, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sept. 30, seeking to shield itself from a crippling damage award owed to Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI).

But the bankruptcy filing is not the end of the saga. The legal battle continues.

Under the proposed reorganization plan, the ILWU would give $6.1 million to terminal operator ICTSI,...

How a fight over 2 jobs bankrupted union of 40,000 dockworkers

In October 2021, Willie Adams, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), sat across the table from President Joe Biden at the White House. The two met again at the White House last month, celebrating the new six-year labor contract for America’s West Coast ports.

“I’ve known Willie for a long time,” said Biden after the latest meeting. “I was kidding him: I said I want to know who his haberdasher is. He looks awfully good, doesn’t he? I like that cut.”
