IMB reported two piracy incidents that took place off Nigeria, on January 7. Both happened in Lagos, where in the first case 4-5 robbers in a small skiff came near an anchored product tanker and tried to board. In the second case, two robbers with plastic hoses boarded an anchored tanker.

More specifically, 4-5 robbers in a small skiff came alongside an anchored product tanker and threw two ropes attached with hooks onto the tanker’s railing.

As IMB reported two robbers boarded a product tanker that was anchored in Puerto La Cruz Anchorage, Venezuela, on December 1. The crew members saw the perpetrators on time and raised the alarm.

11 crewmembers kidnapped from container ship off Nigeria

Pirates boarded a container ship off Nigeria, kidnapping 11 crew including eight from Poland. The container ship ‘MV Pomerania Sky’ was heading to the Nigerian port of Onne and was boarded on October 28.

According to the vessel’s management company, the pirates abducted 11 of the crew, while nine others remain on board and are unharmed.

IMB: 156 piracy incidents reported in the first nine months of 2018

The ICC International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) reported a total of 156 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the first nine months of 2018 compared to 121 for the same period in 2017.

Merchant ship fired with shots off Somalia

A merchant vessel was attacked by pirates while sailing in the Gulf of Aden on 16 October, according to data provided by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
