Standard Club Issues Overview of Cargo Fumigation Landscape

Following the pandemic and its travel bans, fumigators are unable to sail with the vessel. Therefore, ship operators and crew, who do not have the necessary expertise to handle toxic materials, are exposed to a risky operational environment.

In this context, Standard Club has issued guidelines for topping-up of fumigant by crew during the voyage.

Ship Exhaust Emissions are A Major Cause of Worry, Say Scientists

  • Emissions from ship exhausts can have a major impact on air pollution, weather and climate.
  • Until relatively recently these have been largely unregulated, particularly in international waters.
  • Some ships in the open ocean emit large amounts of sulphates from traces of sulphur in the fuel, with a strong potential to alter clouds’ behaviour and pollute coastal areas.

When results of the new research were compared with ships measured in the English Channel (where emissions are controlled through...

Technology to Combat Container Fires in Shipping Industry

  • Fire safety has become a major concern in the container shipping industry, in particular, with vessels of 20,000-TEU and more entering the market.
  • A fire in just one container can have catastrophic implications for the whole of the cargo.
  • The very nature of container shipping means that the cargoes are in general finished goods of high value.
  • Insurer Allianz gives the example of a March 2018 fire onboard the Maersk Honam southeast of Oman.
  •  At the time the ship was carrying 7,860 containers,...
