SC Ports commissions HPC to plan Inland Port Greer’s capacity expansion

South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) has commissioned Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC) to assess the capacity expansion of the Inland Port Greer, one of its intermodal rail terminals located in the Northern part of the state.

South Carolina Ports breaks all-time container record

South Carolina Ports turned in its best cargo-handling performance in history in March — and the volume was 34% higher year-over-year.

“This significant achievement leads up to another historic milestone as we prepare to welcome the first ship to the Leatherman Terminal on Friday,” South Carolina Ports President and CEO Jim Newsome said in a statement. “Our all-time container record reinforces that we are adding more capacity to the Port of Charleston at the right time. The state-of-the-art...

South Carolina Ports finding groove with rail

The South Carolina Ports Authority blamed congestion at other ports on fewer container ships calling in February, “resulting in lower-than-expected volumes.”

The historic congestion in California’s San Pedro Bay has had a cascading effect on other U.S. ports. A snowstorm in the Northeast that put a temporary freeze on cargo movements at some ports also may have contributed to the slowdown in South Carolina, although weather was not mentioned in the SCPA’s press release Wednesday.

South Carolina Ports rides rails to robust January

Rail moves may be just as important to the South Carolina Ports Authority as those on water, so the SCPA can raise a glass to the record-setting January at Inland Port Greer.

Inland Port Greer, the SCPA’s rail-served port in upstate South Carolina, recorded 13,401 rail moves, its best January and a 16% hike year-over-year.

Container volumes were also up in January. South Carolina Ports handled 216,265 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at the Wando Welch and North Charleston container...

South Carolina Ports: Southeast market ‘booming’

The South Carolina Ports Authority said the record-setting 207,066 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) it moved in November stand as evidence that global trade continues to rebound from coronavirus-forced shutdowns earlier in the year.

That November-best figure also represents a 12% year-over-year increase from the 184,928 TEUs handled at the Wando Welch and North Charleston container terminals in 2019.

“SC Ports had a truly remarkable month with a record November for containers handled as well...

Inland South Carolina ports set record

The South Carolina Ports Authority’s (SCPA) headline numbers did not come from the seashore.

The SCPA said Monday that its two inland ports had a record October with a combined total of 16,404 rail moves. Inland Port Greer reported 12,935 rail moves, up 9.2% year-over-year, and Inland Port Dillon had 3,469 rail moves, up nearly 40% from October 2019.

The SCPA said its overall October volumes “show an ongoing recovery and strength in containers, vehicles and inland ports.”

South Carolina sees uptick in port activity

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) said its September volumes reflect the strongest year-over-year activity since the COVID-19 pandemic hit and show a continued recovery and strength in containers, vehicles and inland moves.

The SCPA handled a record-September 195,101 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at the Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals. It said the total was a “slight increase” year-over-year. The SCPA moved 581,912 TEUs in the first quarter of fiscal year 2021, which...

South Carolina Ports sees signs of economic recovery

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) sees the cars parked at its terminal as a drive toward pre-coronavirus days.

The SCPA said its busiest July ever for vehicles handled shows its strength in the roll-on/roll-off vessel sector and signals “a return to normalcy at automotive plants throughout South Carolina and the Southeast.”

The SCPA said it moved 25,128 vehicles, a 47% year-over-year increase, at the Port of Charleston’s Columbus Street Terminal in July.

“We are encouraged by some signs of...

Michelin rolling out tire distribution through South Carolina inland port

Michelin North America will export its finished tires from its South Carolina distribution center through Inland Port Greer, which connects to the Port of Charleston via overnight rail service.

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) said Michelin’s decision to move tires through Inland Port Greer builds on an existing supply chain partnership. Michelin began moving raw materials through the inland port in 2015.

Inland Port Greer is about 10 miles from Michelin’s 3 million-square-foot Southeast...
