Walmart picks site near Port of Charleston for distribution center

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) announced plans Monday to build a $220 million, 3 million-square-foot distribution center in Dorchester County, South Carolina, that is expected to increase volumes at the Port of Charleston by about 5%.

South Carolina Ports volumes holding steady

TEUs during coronavirus pandemic

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) said it finished fiscal year 2020 with “relatively steady volumes” despite waves of canceled sailings and supply chain disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The SCPA finished the fiscal year with 2.32 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled at the Wando Welch and North Charleston container terminals. That’s down 2.8% from fiscal year 2019.

SC Ports posts record container volume

At their monthly meeting, the SCPA Board reviewed the record volumes handled by the Port in 2018. SCPA’s container business grew six percent over the previous year, with a record-breaking 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) handled. The Port moved 199,701 TEUs in December alone, marking the strongest December in the Port’s history.
