Geopolitics contribute to 11% decline in air cargo demand

Workers wearing yellow vests maneuver a large freight pallet under the wing of a jetliner.

The downturn in global air cargo demand intensified during April and is outpacing the slowdown in overall international trade in goods, as the Ukraine war, strict lockdown measures in China and inflation dragged down economic activity, an aviation industry group representing most major airlines reported this week.

Meanwhile, international travel demand in the passenger segment shot up in April, especially in the trans-Atlantic market, in response to reductions in COVID border restrictions ahead...

Airline industry economist sees recession risk in 2023

TEMPE, Ariz. — The slowing global economy is on track for modest growth in 2022, but the odds of a downturn that could reduce cross-border trade next year are increasing, the airline industry’s top economist says.

Marie Owens Thomsen, chief economist at the International Air Transport Association, recently assigned a 20% risk to a recession in the near future.

Unemployment, inflation, consumer spending and the direction of China’s economy coming out of widespread COVID lockdowns will be key...

TEMPE, Ariz. — Frederic Leger announced Tuesday during the heavily attended Cargo Network Services Partnership Conference that he will hand the presidency to Laura Pullins in June so he can focus on being senior vice president of commercial products and services at the International Air Transport Association.

Pullins is director of digital supply chain at Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based HULFT, a data integration services firm in the logistics space. She has held a series of logistics management...

Air cargo market risks downturn as export orders contract

The two-year bull market for air cargo could be headed for a downturn. Freight volumes moved by passenger and cargo airlines contracted in March and April as manufacturing and supply chains faltered in the face of war and COVID headwinds, according to figures from a major airline trade group and independent analysts.

The International Air Transport Association said Tuesday air freight demand in March fell 5.2% year-over-year and that seasonally adjusted volumes reached a 16-month low. On...

Airport congestion blamed for peak season drop in air cargo volume

Sideview of back half of a big jet being loaded with cargo on a sunny day.

Global air cargo volumes paradoxically declined in November amid intense shipping demand during the height of the preholiday peak shipping season, yet freight rates jumped higher and planes were more full.

Blame the disconnect between a red-hot airfreight market and less cargo moved on extreme congestion at major airports, where a shortage of labor among airline service providers is slowing aircraft loading and unloading as well as freight deconsolidation of imports for pickup.

Exorbitant ocean rates, need for speed give air cargo an edge

A close up of a cargo pallet wrapped in plastic on a lift ready to go in the old of an aircraft, waiting in front of jet engine.

Increased use of airfreight by shippers trying to avoid clogged ports is adding pressure to overtaxed air capacity and sharply pushing up rates, especially out of Asia, but new data showing demand plateaued in October reinforces evidence that the traditional busy shipping season started earlier than normal.

In a panic over slower factory production due to power rationing in China and shortages of semiconductors, as well as ocean shipping backlogs that have quadrupled delivery times, more...

Airline group launches certification program for lithium battery transport

A pallet of cargo sits on tarmac near airplane with a hazardous goods warning label on it.

The International Air Transport Association on Tuesday introduced a new industry certification to improve the safe handling and transport of lithium batteries by air logistics providers.

The energy source powers a wide variety of consumer goods ranging from mobile phones and laptops, to toys, cars and e-bikes.

Shipments of lithium batteries must comply with well-established global safety standards for how they are manufactured, tested, packed, marked, labeled and documented. These requirements...

IATA forecasts 2021 air cargo revenues to hit record $175B

The air cargo market is soaring this year and 2022 is looking even better. The International Air Transport Association on Monday estimated that cargo volume for airlines will grow 7.9% in 2021 compared to 2019 and demand will heat up to 13.2% above pre-pandemic levels next year.

Cargo revenues are expected to reach a record $175 billion in 2021, an upward revision of $23 billion from April, and stay near that level at $169 billion in 2022 as cargo yields soften from 15% to 7% growth. Airlines...

Airline group says cargo grew 7.7% in August

The International Air Transport Association reported Wednesday that international air cargo volumes in August grew 8.6 % compared to pre-pandemic levels, continuing a yearlong upward trend and bolstering the market narrative that demand is growing even faster in September because of the holiday shipping rush.

Counting domestic transport, the pace of growth tapered to 7.7% from 8.8% (revised) in July but remained ahead of the long-term average of 4.7% growth.

Growth likely would have been higher...
