Digitalisation: An arrow in shipping’s quiver or hackers’ ace in the hole?

Digitalisation in the maritime sector remains a double-edged sword, because while technology and digital tools support the supply chain significantly, these same tools have opened new vulnerabilities.

Competition in the digital arena is the reflex response from the shipping sector designed to compete at every level. The industry, however, must relearn its reactions to develop a collaborative mind-set when developing cyber systems, particularly where cybersecurity is concerned.

BIMCO & ICS Release New Biofouling Benchmarks

Cleaning a ship’s submerged parts from barnacles and other growths, while the ship is in the water, can transfer invasive species to local marine environments unless it is properly cleaned and the debris is captured.

To combat this problem, and to provide clarity and quality assurance to shipowners, ports and government authorities, BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) have published the first industry standard on in-water cleaning of ships.

Here’s a report on that.

Shipping organisations set stranded crew vaccination as a top priority

Shipping associations and carriers are concerned that the failure to deal with the current seafarer situation, leaving up to 400,000 crew stranded abord ships in some cases for over a year, could also lead to a failure to vaccinate crew in the coming months.

Crew change issues have dominated much of the industry’s Covid-19 response, with some limited success as some countries opened their borders to crew changes under strict rules. However, the international community’s failure to designate...
